My Great Grandad joined the Oxford and Bucks Light Infantry in 1914, but in 1917 he was in the Northamptonshire regiment. I am trying to find out why he changed regiments or if they merged? How can I find this out?

Hello Bones,
I don't know if this will help or not..(I haven't had time to go through the pages) but if you go here: http://www.1914-1918.net/oxbucks.htm there is a list of what companies merged and what they become. If you don't find anything here, do a Google search for Northants Regiment and see what comes up.
Good Luck.

hi,
if you went on leave or returned from wounds hopefully you'd go back to your regiment but if a particular regiment had suffered heavy casualties or was just understrength then you'd be sent there instead to help rebuild it.
so although his medal would say a particular regiment (his first one - the one he enlisted in) swapping between regiments was very very common and some men had upto 4
