RonaRona,
Can you attach some dates to your names?
There were quite a few FAIRWEATHERs in Yorkshire in the 1800s. There is a Francis FAIRWEATHER born in Esrick, living in Scarborough, with a wife named Mary, a son named Thomas born about 1879 and several other children. Francis is a tailor.
Does this sound like the right family? If so, you can look them up on the 1881 census. They are also in the 1871, 1891 and 1901 censuses and, if you don't have access, I -- or someone else -- can give you the details...

The Sarah who died in 1906 is in the 1861 census, living with her mother Elizabeth (age 73, wid) in Wheldrake, Yorkshire. Sarah was 33 and unmarried. Elizabeth is listed as 'incapacitated by age' and Sarah is listed as 'nurse.' Both were born in Escrick, Yorkshire.
in 1861, Francis Fairwether (sic) was apprenticed as a tailor in Bubwith, Yorkshire. He was born in Escrick abt 1847 (age 14).
in 1871, Francis is married to Mary and has a 3-mo old son, Francis W. (see birth and death, above). They are living in Scarborough, and he is a tailor.
in 1881, Francis and Mary are with children John H., Mary E., and Thomas A. and living in Scarborough. Sarah is listed as 'aunt' age 55, unmarried, and living with nephew Walter, his wife Hannah M., and their children John, Ellen, and Frances Elizabeth. Sarah is listed as an annuitant, probably from her mother's death - it might be worth looking into... If there was a will, it might name other siblings (obviously she had a brother whose wife gave birth to Walter - age 39 b: York).
in 1891 Francis and Mary are living with children John H., Thomas A. , Jessie M., and Emily M. in Scarborough. 65-yr-old "Aunt" Sarah is still living with Walter Fairweather and family.

in 1901, Thomas is boarding in Leven, and his occupation is listed as 'tailor (occasional evangelist)'.
Francis and Mary are living with children Jessie M. and Emily M., as well as 73-yr-old Sarah, single, listed as his mother, living on own means (as also in 1891 when living with Walter), b: Esrick.
In 1861, Walter is shown to be the son of Christopher and Elizabeth Fairweather, so Christopher must be Sarah's brother-in-law, since she must have been married to Francis' father (although maybe not? in which case he would be her brother), so the invalid Elizabeth would have been her mother-in-law or her mother, but Christopher's mother. Siblings to Walter are Frances and Elizabeth.
The IGI shows Christopher's christening as being 16 SEP 1810 in Escrick, Yorkshire, England. His parents, and Sarah's (or her husband's) also, are GET READY - ARE YOU SITTING DOWN??? John Fairweather and Elizabeth. So Francis' grandparents are John (who died before 1861) and Elizabeth (the invalid) Fairweather, but it's not clear if they are his paternal or maternal grandparents. ;)
Also from the IGI, other siblings to Christopher are: Isabel, chr: 24 Mar 1807 (appears to have married Charles Pemberton, has daug Betsy Pemberton, son Henry Binns b: 1836 Wheldrake to first husband? in 1861); William, chr 14 Aug 1808; and John, chr 18 Oct 1812 (in 1871 m: to Ann, 3 children). William is alive in 1861, and married to Martha. The IGI has the marriage of John Fairweather and Elizabeth Brown on 1 Nov 1806 in Esrick, Yorkshire, So Elizabeth (the invalid's) maiden name was Brown.

Found other siblings to Christopher on the IGI: Anne, chr: 1 Jan 1815 (poss m: Thomas Field); Thomas, chr: 22 Dec 1816; Joseph, ch:r 17 Feb 1819 (in 1861 Joseph is alive and married to Mary with 3 children); Henry, chr: 23 Nov 1823 (in 1861, Henry is alive and married to Emily); Sarah, chr: 17 Jan 1821; and a second Sarah (the first must have died) chr 28 Nov 1826. It's possible this Sarah was Francis' mother.
So of the sons, only Thomas is unaccounted for in 1861, though it appears he married Margaretta Brown 25 DEC 1839 in Escrick, Yorkshire, England. One account I found has them moving to Canada.
So, Francis was most likely born out of wedlock to Sarah Fairweather, daughter of John and Elizabeth (Brown) Fairweather. Odds are there is no record of who his father was. The only possible record might be his marriage - if he knew who his father was, he might have given his name for the certificate, but it's a long shot...

However, 1841 census shows:
Elizabeth Fairweather abt 1791 Yorkshire, England Escrick Yorkshire
Sarah Fairweather abt 1831 Yorkshire, England Escrick Yorkshire
William Fairweather abt 1811 Yorkshire, England Escrick Yorkshire
Maria Weston abt 1791 Escrick Yorkshire
HO107/1227/7
Registration district: York
Sub-registration district: Escrick
ED, institution, or vessel: 3
Folio: 19
Page: 2
Maria is not actually in this household, as transcribed. Sarah's and Elizabeth's ages are probably rounded down, as many were in this census, so you can't use the 1841 census to get an accurate year of birth. John is nowhere to be seen in this record - perhaps he was elsewhere working and sending supporting funds back to his family...

The John Fairweather living with son John on 1851 is probably the one on this death record:
John Fairweather 1854 Apr-May-Jun Helmsley North Riding Of Yorkshire (vol 9d pg 237)
You could send for it to see:a) if son John signed at his death; b) if it lists his late wife's name. Then you'd know if this John was part of your family...

Hello,
I have information on the Fairweather family from the Helmsley area, if it's of any help.
I believe that there are connections between the families around the Helmsley/Hawnby areas and those at Wheldrake.
Happy to share what I have.
Regards
Sam
