Hi everyone,
I'm trying to get some details about my great grandparents. They were James Lay and Jane Lay (née Salter). They were married in Winchester in 1840. I believe I have found Jane, a widow, on the 1881 census living at 6 St James Villas, Winchester. If I'm right she died later that year. Can anyone help me find out where they were in the intervening years, by an census lookup, please? I'd also like to know if my grandfather had any siblings.
Many thanks. Regards,
Heatha. :)

Hi Heatha
Have you looked at 9 St James Villas in the 1881 census, there were quite a few Lay people there. If you find your Jane on the LDS 1881 census then go to the next household until you reach no. 9. Also in the 1841 census
James Lay 35 yrs Gardener and Jane Lay 30 yrs (both yes to this county) were at Upper Brook St. Winchester. There were no other people with them.
Hope this helps

Thanks, Geoff. I don't want to sound ungrateful, because I'm not, but it's not 1841 or 1881 that I'm asking after. It's all those years in between. I really need some information from '51, '61 or '71 to clarify the family situation.

Heatha.

Hi Heatha,
In 1871 Jane, 53 and a Widow was living at 6 St James Villa Rd, St Faith, Winchester with Gilbert, 18 and Emily, 12.

Hi Nev,
Thanks very much for that. :) Were Gilbert and Emily her children? You can tell how little I know about the family! I suspected James might have died quite young. It was a family trait. I'm trying to narrow down the gap in order to search for his death certificate.
Kind regards,
Heatha.
