My ggrandfather’s obit in the local paper (Hampshire Chronicle) in 1875 mentions that he was educated at Brackley Grammar School near Oxford.

I’ve Googled, and have found a list of schools in Brackley (which isn't that near Oxford), but can’t find which one it would be. Maybe it doesn’t still exist.

Can anyone give me a pointer in the right direction?

Thank you for your help.
Susan

Hello Susan
I cut and paste your Bracley School message and Google came up with this http://www.prole.demon.co.uk/64c.html scroll down to......HAWKINS, C. S. Brackley School Secondary
On this search it also comes up with http://home.clara.net/drericwebb/oaw-web/oaw-mems.htm where it says.................. so I know nothing of them except that the sister eventually attended Brackley Grammar School......i havent searched and found this particular entry but it might be worth mailing both sites to see if they know more. You can also contact the Oxfordshire Family History Society http://www.ofhs.org.uk/mfiche.html as just putting Bracley family history society brings up Oxfordshire so they may be able to tell you where it was or the local council as i have found my local council of some help.

My appologies if you have found and searched these already

This has got to be Brackley, Northants - it's about 20 miles North of Oxford.
Is the school marked on the old maps web-site?
http://www.old-maps.co.uk/

I think it is likely to be Magdalen College School - which has links with Magdalen College in Oxford, hence the refrerence you have found.

The school has a web-site
http://www.magdalen.northants.sch.uk/mcs_home.htm
with a contact number, you might try 'phoning them to ask?

Thank you very much for your replies. Sorry not to thank you immediately – unfortunately, I’ve been too busy with current family events rather than the much more interesting family history :)

I’m looking forward to following your leads as soon as possible...

Your help is very much appreciated. Thank you.
