Hi
The need to provide a more complete archaeological recording and mapping of the Graveyards than we previously have ever done. Photographs of each stone or marker could, in-turn, also be incorporated into this compilation to further supplement the historical archival of these slowly decaying and destroyed monuments Graveyard Project website has been on test for a few weeks and is now running, it will be updated every week.

I have been banging on about this very subject for many years, in fact a couple of years ago I challenged every Family History Society in the land to photograph and transcribe one graveyard in their area and upload it to a web site as I did with Staincross.

The result almost complete apathy, now many gravestones are no longer standing.
Good luck with your efforts Steve.
Cheers

I may be out of my depth here but another site i visit often lossiefowk - a Scottish site - The man who runs the site Don Stewart has photographed all the Graves and headstones in the local chuchyard and put a link on the web site that holds the pictures so that we can look at them.

This may be a little off topic, but I have a photographic postcard of a Monumental Mason's yard , presumably in the Millom area, Cumberland, taken in 1915. It shows the memorial cross being prepared for my Gt Grandfather's grave and several other monuments, including one being prepared for the husband of one of his cousins. I wonder if it was the practice of the day to photograph these stones as thery were being built and how many more similar photos exist ? This photo shows inscription details of 6 other memorial stones, so 8 in total and for the most part the inscriptions are legible.
Names are:
Fred WORTH, beloved husband of Lily
Joseph DICKINSON beloved husband of Ellen Eccles
William Henry BUCKINGHAM beloved husband of Grace
Esther beloved wife of Henry SOUTHERN
Joseph DIXON
M E LEWIS beloved wife of W LEWIS
Sir John William RAMSDEN (I think, it is hard to read)
Thomas CASS
More information on dates etc if anyone is interested.

Whilst I don't have the time to start my own project I do have a number of photos of gravestones (from own family research) in Lincolnshire and partner has a few from Essex.

Living in Somerset I am more than willing to go off and photograph churchyards/gravestones if anyone is working on these.
Does anyone know if anyone has a project going on the above counties?

My priorities for giving photographic assistance would be :-
1. Somerset - as I live there
2. Anywhere within 40 miles radius of Taunton (can be flexible on that)
2. Lincolnshire - as I visit family from time to time.

Steve, I tried to log on to the Graveyard Project web page but I was told it wasn't available. How do I contact you to send the photo?

Hi Steve

All I can say is I wish the Isaac PEEL on your site was one of my PEILLE & variation ancestors. Not only does it give his date of death, age & where he came from & the name, date of death & age of his wife but all of the following.
No dates but the name of the wife's brother + 4 of Isaac's children one of which must have lived past childhood as it gives the name of her husband too. That is the sort of information we would all love to find on the headstone of an ancestor.

Keep up the good work
Sally

Hi
Thank you for your comment; I try to upload new Mis every month.
Gravestones hold a lot of information about families and one of the greatest assets to family Historians and local historians, but I am sorry to say this is quickly disappearing. The one great advantage is it as Photos of most of the graves, and for people living in other countries, seeing their family grave most be a bonus.
