I am having dificulty tracing ancestors before 1800 , i am relatively new to this and have so far only used Church Parish records and Census
I have a Benjamin HOOD born 1806 (estimate) a Blacksmith living in Penshaw Durham who on the 1851 Census state born Stranton, (West Hartlepool) ....but no trace in Parish records at Stranton or Hartlepool, also children and first marriage do not appear on Penshaw or Stranton Parish records but his second marriage does appear onD
Any advise on how i trace say Weslyan Chapel records around 1806? or other non Parish Options

Geoff,
I did a quick search on the IGI with the information you gave. I'm sure you've already given it a go, but just in case you haven't...
I tried looking for Christenings in County Durham 1831 to 1851 (don't know the children you have for marriage) and got Jane, Benjamin, Margaret and Robert all christened at Houghton Le Spring (which is only about 3 miles from Penshaw all with the mother name Ann - could this be your missing family?
I then tried looking for birth/christenings and the nearest I could find with anything like the right date was Benjamin Hood, son of Robt. Hood and Mary. born 25 Dec 1809, christened 15 Jan 1810 at Postern Street Independent in Newcastle. While not on the doorstep it's still less than 10 miles from Penshaw.
In the record of the second marriage do you have Benjamin's father's name? Is it Robert. I may be completely off track, but thought I'd give it a try. Good luck in finding your missing Hoods!
Regards, Neil
PS. I'd suggest you repost this thread under a forum with a broader remit than the Napoleanic Wars.

Dear Geoff,
Perhaps you could ask Northumberland & Durham Family History Society, if they know where you can access Wesleyan Chapel Records?

Unfortunately you do not show any location details in your profile so any help will have to be general.
Have you checked the LDS catalogue it has a number of returns for Stranton including some for the Methodist church

You could also consult the RG4 records at the National Archives for his baptism (if indeed he was baptised%message=Unfortunately you do not show any location details in your profile so any help will have to be general.
His marriages should appear in the parish registers as at that time such nonconformists were to be married in the C of E.
It may be that he married in his brides parish do you have any pointers to that?
Cheers

GeoffHi Geoff,
May I suggest that you try looking at the parish registers available from Ancestral Indexes (http://www.parishchest.com/en-gb/dept_2888.html).

Many old records have been transcribed by Family History Societies and are now available on line at: Family History Online
You have to register to search the records and there is a charge, typically less than 10p to look at individual records

Although some Durham records are on familyhistoryonline Stranton isn't among them I'm afraid.
