While I'm waiting for copies of marriage certificates thought that I would try and find immigration records for my GGgrandfather who arrived in Canada in 1865 (according to the 1901 census).
Where would he most likely have sailed from if he lived in Stepney?

Your best hope is to look at the point of immigration (i.e. where he landed). Emigration records are limited with no ships' passenger lists being required until 1890. He could have emigrated from any port and many of them had ships which carried traffic across to North America. I know that some people used local ports, but others would travel across country to Liverpool or Southampton to emigrate.

Although people did travel long distances across country to a port, I think someone living in the Stepney, in the centre of London, is likely to have sailed from there. Local papers of the time have adverts for all the sailings.

Thank you Geoffers and Wirral, I guess nothing about my search is going to be easy. I have no idea where he landed in Canada, I only know that he is not in the Ontario census for 1871 where he was in later years. Will try and find sources for Nova Scotia and other upper areas.

Just come back from my local library, looking through the Gore's Trade Directory (for Liverpool). At the back there is a section that lists all the ports to which ships sailed & gives the shipping lines that sailed to those ports. If someone could look at a similar directory for London, they may help to narrow down your search. In the adverts in a different section of the book, it even gave the names of the captains/masters of each vessel, when they sailed & the cost.
