I have a very frustrating HAMBLY family and hope someone has some light to shed on the almost eternal darkness.

1859 Thomas HAMBLY age 28 married Mary Elizabeth WOTTON in the register office Newton Abbott. His father was stated as Francis HAMBLY both were Sawyers.

1861 Census Thomas and Mary living in East Street Newton Abbott he is stated as age 30 (that fits) from Redruth Cornwall.

1871 Census Thomas, Mary and family living in Richards Court Newton Abott he is age 40 (again that fits) from Truro Cornwall.

That is as far as I have been able to go. I have not found Francis on the 61 or 51 census. I have also searched the very good parish record transcripts held by the CFHS in Truro.

So where is Francis and just where was Thomas born? There are enough parishes in and around Truro and Redruth to make a wide ranging search.

I now need some additional direction or suggestion to find some light in the tunnel.

Hi Stuart,
He is not in Cornwall in 1841 as far as I can see so I suspect he is in Newton Abbott and you will find his parents there too :)

Hello Stuart

I think I've found Francis (Thomas's father) on the 1841 census

HO 107/143/7 Folio 31 Page 20
Redruth
Guilly Field
Francis Hambly / 50 / Carpenter / Y
Rebecca do / 35 / Y
Catharine do / 15 / Dressmaker / Y
Folio 31 Page 21
Ellen do / 5 / Y

Sorry, but there is no sign of Thomas. I've looked at the LDS 3 Counties CD for Thomas in Devon in 1851, but have drawn a blank :(

Hope this helps a bit
Best wishes
Ann

Thanks Scottie and Ann

That looks like a giant leap forward.
