Trying to smash down a brick wall and wonder if anyone could help?

I am stuck on James Campbell (born 1839 Newcastle) and his marriage to Mary Ann Scotter (born 1845 Holt, Norfolk).

James was a Marine Engineer (or a variation thereof), son of James Campbell & Ann who I think could have died in 1884, after marrying Mary in 1876 at St Stephen, Hull.

James had several siblings (Jane, Mary, Fanny, George, Thomas, Rosetta, Margaret (later Hunter) and Annie)).

James appears, married, on the 1881 census on "Vanadis" - a ship moored on the south coast near Hampshire. Mary however is nowhere to be seen and the last place i can find her is living with her parents, unmarried in Hull in 1871 before her wedding.

They did have children as there is a grandson (?) Percy who turns up in Liverpool and a g grandson (?) Cyril who was awarded the DFC in WW2. There are too many Percy & Cyril Campbells around to check each birth certificate.

Trouble is cannot get the link between James & Mary and Cyril & Percy.

Any pointers would be gratefully received as Mary is the last sibling of my g g grandmother that I am stuck on.

Many thanks
Ruth

Dear Rutht,
I have had a look at this problem of yours and wanted to say that there are two James Campbells born Newcastle on the census, i found the one on the Vessell "Vanadis" but there is another one born same time married to an Ann Eliza born 1840 Blakeney, Norfolk which is not far from Holt. They seem to be living in Newcastle area up to 1901.
The only census they seem to be missing is the 1861 census. Do you think this could be the person who you are looking for?
best wishes,
Phil A.
