Having posted this to the Quebec & Montreal Rootsweb lists I thought I would try the forum as well as all I need is to hear a “Yes” answer from just one person.
Can any Canadian remember a bakery called ‘McKENZIE’S Bakery’ in Canada? Perhaps someone has access to a directory for after 1926.
My granddad’s brother, James Russell GALL born 1891 emigrated from Scotland to Canada around 1926/7. My dad said that James travelled with the McKENZIES & he thinks it was to Montreal or Quebec. (can't take all he said as gospel as his
memory wasn't as good as he thought it was)
My cousin who was born 1937 said she could remember the McKENZIES visiting them when she was younger & both she & my dad remember a photograph of them all standing against a van in Canada with the bakeries name on it.
I have hit a brickwall with James & hope that if anyone can remember the bakery it will give me a place to start looking for my gt.uncle Jimmy.

I have searched CA0035 Canada & Newfoundland Gazetteer & Business Directory, there are no Bakeries in Montreal (or all of Quebec) named McKenzie.
I have also looked at Lovell's Montreal Directory 1930, again no Bakeries of that name, but in the Alphabetical section there is:
McKenzie, Thos baker 5296 Drolet. There is no James Gall in Montreal in 1930.

Thank you very much for taking the time to look at the directory Chris. Part of the trouble is that I do not know how long it took for Mr.McKenzie to set up the bakery.
I will now have to go & look up where Drolet is & then see if I can find a Thomas on the ships lists to see if there is a possible Thomas from Scotland around the right time.
You have given me something to work on for which I am grateful.

Ah but that was why I said I was looking for a needle in a haystack. ;)
This bakery, I believe, was still in business in the 1950's so all I needed was one person to say that there used to be a bakery of that name in their home town when they were a kid & it would have given me somewhere to start looking.
Hopefully now that later shipping dates are comming online I will find my Jimmy GALL & the McKenzies sailing to Canada.

Hi Sally
You are searching for James Russel Gall b 1891
I am searching for family connection of Alexander / Alfred Gall b c1895. He was a native of Brought Ferry, Angus Sct. Alexander or Alfred died 1957 and he was always called Sandy. He was a coach painter. He married Ann Finlayson Smith (she was also called Jane & Jean) 20-7-1923 in Edinburgh.
I do not have any detail at all from his marriage Cert. Wish I had.
During my searching I came across the GALL Website.
I have also corresponded during 2001 with James Brian Gall researcher in Broughty Ferry.
James Brian told me his father Charles Gall of Garden City, Herts. AL8 6YD
He has researched their lot back to the early 1800's. No email for Charles.
Maybe if you try both you could find your James Russell Gall and if you find any links to my Alexander / Alfred Gall of Broughty Ferry please get in touch.
Good Luck! Bill

Thanks for the link & email address Bill. Checked the web site but no connection there. My GALLs were all born & lived in Lanarkshire, James & his siblings all being born in Baillieston & James being the only one to go elsewhere.
Thanks again for your input.

one thing you can do is search the canadian business directory for canada and then try each province. i got hits on manitoba, ontario and new brunswick. there is also a mckenzie, bc but to new. this is a business search to see if some1 else has the same name as you. non incorporated.
i searched ancestry and there are galls but none of that birth year

Hi Canuck1
Tried a search for Canadian Business Directory but although lots of hits for that name I don't think any of them are at the site you mentioned. Is there any chance you still have the web site & could post it for me please as your info looks promising.
Many thanks for trying to help me with this problem.

Sally
