The following photograph is of one of my grandmother's brothers. I am not sure which one (except his surname would have been Miell), as they nearly all worked for the Union Castle Line out of Southampton, and I am having trouble trying to work out which one was which (no names on any of the photos I am trying to identify:( )

I think it says around his cap 'Master at Arms', my question is could he have been employed at Southampton Docks as a master at arms, or would he have been on a ship? Would the Union Castle Line ships have had masters at arms, or were they only on Naval ships?

Before anyone asks, no, I do not know the name of the lovely dog, and neither do I know which ship is in the background (except I suspect it is one of the Castle Line) ;)

Best wishes
Ann

Hi Ann,
Yes they did have Master of Arms on board the Union Castle liners. If you google Union Castle line you will get stacks of info and might be able to identify the liner in the background (funnel shape and size, lifeboats etc etc) - only a few regularly docked at Southampton.

Hello Marion

Yes, I have seen the Red Duster site, which, as you say has masses of info on the Union Castle Line. I tried to match up the ship but, not having much to go on, it was a tad difficult  I couldn't find anything about masters at arms, but I probably didn't look hard enough  Will look again.

Thanks again

Ann
