Hi
I am new to all this military research
Most family members lived in Athlone Ireland, and were in the army at some stage the earlyest known was in 1847 James McMenamin (or spelled a little different) to last known on his marriage cert in 1925 was
William McMenem(e)y family members would be:

James McMenamin

William Decamp (he married in 1856 said on his marriage cert he was a pensioner at the age of 21)

John McMenemey we have a letter to a brother in South Africa that says he was nearly sent to South Africa while he was in the Curragh Camp in Dublin, letter dated 1905

Henry McMenemy (could have also been spelled a little different) on his married cert in 1915 says he is in the Connaught Rangers.

William McMenemy (could have also been spelled a little different) on his marriage cert in 1925 Mayo says he was a soldier (born 1904)

Edward McMenemey (could have also been spelled a little different) on his marriage and birth of 1st child says he was in the RFA married 1917 1st child born 1920.

Below men are from Dublin

Denis Bennett not sure but he died of sickness from the WW1, he died 1920

William Ennis believed he was in the RAMC

Louis(Lewis) Payne believed he was in Royal Artillery WW1

I would love to get the records for the above men as I live in Canada and can't get to the KEW would someone reccomend a researcher to me or are there other ways to find out the information from here.

Also would you know of a list of regiments that were in Athlone that hese men would have joined 1847-1925 also for Dublin from early 1900's

Hope you can help

Thank you
Carol

For the early to mid-19th century, Soldiers' Docments are indexed on TNA's web-site
http://www.catalogue.nationalarchives.gov.uk/search.asp

In the 'Word or Phrase' field, just enter a surname, you will have to try variant spellings, e.g. McMenemy, MacMenemy, McMenemey, etc. In the last field, enter WO. The hits you are looking for will have the prefix WO97 or WO121.

Don't necessarily think of people joining a regiment in the area they lived; that was a mistake I made some 25 years ago in looking for an Irish ancestors who enlisted in the army; their service records show that they enlisted in Cardiff (Wales in case you don't know) and Portsmouth.

If these family married/had children whilst in the army, you may find references in some minor indexes kept with the main GRO index; at least some of these can be viewed online on a pay-per-view web-site 1837 online. The indexes which may lead you to certificates to assist your research are:

Index to Regimental Registers of Births, 1761-1924
Index to Army Chaplains' returns of Births; and Marriages; and Deaths 1796-1880
Indexes to Army Returns of Births; and Marriages; and Deaths 1881-1955.

If any of the soldiers died in WW1, you may find a death certificate included in:
Index to Army Other Ranks' War Deaths 1914-1921
Index to Army Officers' War Deaths 1914-1921
and should find reference at the CWGC web-site
