I need somebodys help. We have found John Gates and family on the 1861 census. It states birth location for all the children as Stepney. I have searched the FreeBMD and 1837 for the birth reg. for any of the children and have found none in Stepney. I did find a Frederick on the 1837 and freeBMD, it stated the date as 1847 not 1846 that I know when Frederick was born. I thought maybe they reg. late so sent for the certificate, wrong Frederick.
Any suggestions on how to find a record of any of the childrens births?
Sharon

Have you found the family on any other census? This might possibly give a different place of birth for the children that you could try.

Good luck with your search,
Lynda:)

During the earlier years of civil registration, you will find that not all births are registered. The extent to which this occurred varies from district to district. It would seem that there was greater under-registration in larger urban areas. Assuming that you've tried the name GATE and other possible variations, it may just be that these births were not registered. This being the case, you need to hope that they were at least baptised so that you can trace some record through church registers. Having written that, do check in later (and earlier) census returns to make sure that the birthplace is consistent.
