George Thomas LOTT was my grandfather (loads of g's back) and was a gunnar in the Royal Marine Artillary. According to the various census he was born around 1827 in Southampton and according to his marriage certificate his father was Charles LOTT, a tailor.

Can anyone help me with his baptism and therefore his mother and any siblings?? Southampton is such a big place, I don't know where to start looking.

He married in Portsea (St Mary) in 1852 and his daughter was born in Kingsbench Alley - can anyone tell me whether this area still exists?

Thanks in advance for any help

There should be records relating to him at The National Archives which will help your research. Have a look at TNA's research guides
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/research/guides.htm
(click on 'R' and then select the various links on Royal Marines)

Being born c.1827, he may still have been at home for the 1841 census. I don't have access to it for Southampton, but if it's on 'Ancestry', someone may be able to find him for you. I had a look in Pigot's Directory of 1830, but no trace of a tailor called LOTT in Southampton.
