Can anyone check the 1861 census for Isaac Last b c1837 in Crowfield Suffolk. He is found 1871 onwards in Fulham with wife Ann and children and i suspect he married her sometime between 1861-4 i havent looked for the marriage yet.
I have been looking for the census and just cant see it. I have done a soundex but...........need a fresh pair of eyes on this one please |help|

Tracey, I don't see Isaac in 1861 either, despite looking for first name only, no name born 1837 Crowfield and various other combinations.

Free BMD does show a marriage record for an Isaac LAST in the March quarter of 1863 in Chelsea. [Wasn't Isaac and Ann's first child born in Chelsea?] Possible match for Isaac's bride is Anna BOWLER listed on the same page. Reference is Volume 1a Page 279.

Good luck,
Trish

Crowfield is fairly small, so I've just been through it in 1861 on the Archive CD Books CD, and he's certainly not there under any disguise. There's an antique couple who may well be his parents, but Isaac has evidently already left for the smoke by then.

As per a message that I've just stuck on another thread, the whole of the Belgravia sub-district of St George Hanover Square registration district is missing in 1861. This includes Pimlico, which is right next door to Chelsea, so, without wishing to be unduly pessimistic, if he was a few yards down the road across the border, no amount of creative thinking on possible name variations will find him, I'm afraid.

Thank you Trish and Mythology

Trish......... i found the same as you on freebmd and Isaacs birth on that was 10 years out and on all of the census from then his age has been consistant and i have found with a lot of my other ones that they may have lied in the begining but forgot to lie later on ! But you never know !

Mythology.... knowing London as i (and you ) do i will always think im in a sub district of Belgravia when im on my way to Libertys or get my lunch from a nice Japanese sushi bar next to Vogue House ! But then i never understand why SW starts at the Eros end of The Strand. When i looked up where i work on 1901 census it was confusing as the house numbers had changed drastically and Wigmore St was a field ! Luckily the old deli next to me knew the old numbers as it has been in their family for over 100 years.

Back to Last......i said i would look for a family member and will give him what i know and he can send off for the birth certificate and then i will know if Isaac lied about his age !!

Many thanks

Tracey

Ummm ......

"When i looked up where i work on 1901 census it was confusing as the house numbers had changed drastically and Wigmore St was a field !"

I think you'd better go and have another look at that map.

You will, no doubt, know Debenhams store. I have a connection with that lot - two of my Bigsby girls married two Debenham brothers, and the son of one of these couples is the William Debenham who went into partnership with Thomas Clark in the early 1800s - the Debenhams web site says 1813, and from what I have in directory entries I wouldn't disagree. Mr Clark's shop then became Clark & Debenham, and went through a number of later name changes, but even back then it was in Wigmore Street - the address is given both in directory entries for the shop and on some of the baptism records for William's children.

I don't know when Wigmore Street was built, but the Debenham's site reckons that the company goes back to 1778, which sounds reasonable enough to me, because I have Clark & Co., Linen Drapers, listed in Wigmore Street in the Universal Directory circa 1791.

It certainly wasn't a field in 1901 !

Hi Mythology

Back then i think the original Debenhams was closer to Cavendish Square end of Wigmore st. The bit that was a field was closer to where Marylebone Lane meets Wigmore St where Alexander home furnishing is now near St Christophers Place, i will double check. My Neighbours had there 100 year celebrations and did a little bit of the history and so i will double double check with them !

I am a bit behind on this side and need to catch up. A few straglers north of the boarder are keeping me occupied, still !
Never the less i am truly greatful for any information concerning these and will print off and resume as soon as possible.

Many many thanks

Hi Tracey
Simon was baptised 28th March 1840 at Crowfield, according to the parish register. FreeBMD lists his birth as March quarter 1840 Bosmere &c vol 12 page 329. That would give you his mother's maiden name. Also now have the family in 1851 if you haven't already got it.

Thanks Wirral

This is good timing as i am seeing my mums cousin tomorrow. The 1851 would be great if its no trouble. Is there mention of Isaacs baptism as he is the descendant line ?

Huge thanks Wirral this is much appreciated.
