Gareth,

There is a William CARTER in the 1861 census, living in Great Missenden:

William, Head, 73, Farmer, Berks Pangbourne
Sarah, Wife, 74, Bucks Risborough
George, Son, 19, Ag Lab, Bucks Gt Missenden
William, Son, 17, Ag Lab, Bucks Gt Missenden

Seems a very old mother and father.

So it looks as though William snr was in Bucks from at least 1842 (if this is the right William). I've looked at the 1851 census and it only has one CARTER b in Pangbourne (an 11mnth old girl living in Thatcham).

I think you probably need to enlist help from the Bucks board.

Just to add to Harry's message, there's also a Sarah KEEN in the same household. She's listed as a granddaughter, aged 20. It looks like her occupation is "Servant" -- although the word is scratched out and something illegible is written in -- and her birthplace is given as Bucks Gt Missenden.

On the same census page, living in the "Grocer's Shop," is an Elizabeth KEEN, widow, 49 years old, occupation Grocer, born in Bucks, Bradenham. Also in the household is her son, James KEEN, unmarried, 15 years old, an Ag. Lab., born in Bucks, Gt. Missenden.

As you are no doubt aware, there are several CARTER baptisms in the IGI (batch C137541) around that date but not your one!

It might be worth checking the PR just to verify that he hasn't been missed off the transcription.

What most people do if they can't get to a suitable repository is to use a mormon Family History Centre.

.........and if you can't get to a record centre and can't get to a mormon FHC, you might try County Record office to see if they can provide copies of records on fiches/film, or photocopies; or if the local Family History Society has transcribed/indexed any records which may assist.
