Hello all, i was wondering if anyone can help break down a minor brick wall.

My grandmother-in-laws Jewell name comes from South Cerney or at least i thought so.

I can confirm that her Great Grandfather, Edward Jewell a waterman, was born and christened in S.Cerney in 1829 along with his sisters, Hannah and Ann and his brother Charles. His parents were Alfred Jewell and Mary Besley which i too can confirm were married in S.Cerney.

However Alfred Jewells father Thomas Jewell isn't such a certainty, despite finding his wedding details in Cirencester to Jane Stephens of Cirencester in 1789, i can't confirm if Thomas was born or christened in S.Cerney. His wedding states that he was of the parish of S.Cerney but despite going through the PRs at Gloucestershire Record Office i couldn't find any Jewells christened there until i found Thomas Jewells daughter Jane Jewell in 1891.

Can anyone help me?

I can't help with any positive information, just some thoughts.

Have you found any of the family (especially Alfred) in census returns to confirm their birthplaces? The place where someone resided at time of marriage was frequently not their birthplace.

If census returns show the family was born in South Cerney and there are no baptisms in the parish registers - Was this a non-confirmist family?.

Since i posted this, Trish has kindly found Edward Jewell (alfreds son) on the 1871 Census, however he has put Cirencester down as his birth place not S.Cerney which i confirmed as his christening parish. So i have a feeling that maybe Alfred was born in Cirencester, i have confirmed that Alfreds sister was indeed christened in S.Cerney though.

Its all complicated, but at least i have maybe knocked a brick down from this wall!
