This might sound odd but where would I start to find a death? I'm looking for a death record for Fred Pierpoint, real name Thomas Fredrick Pierpoint, so could be either. I have him in Manchester in 1901. and on an Ellis Island record for 1919 then aged 38 on board a ship for New York. I do not have a birth date for him but I am sure he was born in Port Elisabeth South Africa. I have been led to believe that his birth was never registered. He also had a brother Harry.

You will need to check the GRO for his death if it is not listed on freebmd.

I think that you need to know the state in which he died before you're likely to be able to find the details, I understand that until relatively recently there was no nation-wide register of deaths in the USA. It might be worth a search on Ancestry (not Ancestry uk) although you will probably have to subscribe to get any details

I found this on www.familysearch.org (http://www.familysearch.org/) There was no Thomas listed that was alive in 1901. Hope it helps.

According to the California Death Records on Rootsweb, that Fred PIERPOINT was born in Ohio:

Thanks for everyone’s help. I am sure that the Fred that was found for me in the 1901 census is my Grandfather, as I was told he was born in South Africa, and that's where it states on that census. He was a carpenter joiner ,which also fits. He worked on ships. If he did stay in America I wonder if he remarried. But when you look at lists there are lots of Fred Pierpoints I don't know how I would go about finding the right one.
