I am trying to find information about a railway accident which happened to my gt grandfather in 1867, unfortunately I do not know in which month. He worked for the GPO as a postal sorter on the railway, and was retired in Oct 1867 due to the results of a "serious accident" sustained on the railway in the course of his work.
I have his work record, but unfortunately there are no details given about the accident as to where & when it happened, he was awarded two lots of compensation one of £40 and another of just over £40, this would no doubt have been a substantial amount in 1867, and I imagine would probably have been serious enough for there to have been a report in a local newspaper. At that time he was living in Rose Hill st in Derby, would there have been a local newspaper to have covered that area? if so, can someone give me the name of it, and whether it is still published, if it is I would like to contact them to see if the article may be in their archives?

Also, would anyone be able to tell me, what railway line he would have been on if travelling between Derby & London with the mail?
Any information would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Hello Maud

The British Library Newspaper Library at Collindale is a the place to start looking for newspaper titles. Here's the catalogue page:
http://www.bl.uk/catalogues/newspapers/welcome.asp
Enter Derby in the search box and click on Sort by place. It lists 102 newspaper titles and their publication dates, not all of them cover the period you're interested in.

Derby Local Studies Library would be a good place to contact:
http://www.derby.gov.uk/LeisureCulture/Libraries/LocalStudiesLibrary/?qsNavSetting=max. They have local newspapers on microfilm.

Good luck

Colin

I know that the route from Derby to London runs from Chesterfield to St Pancras. the railway routes them selves are abbrieviated to SPC (St Pancras - Chesterfield) unfortunately there are about 10 SPC's.
In the 1800's the main newspaper in Derby was called the Derby Mercury. You can look at these articles at the Local records office in Derby. Whether you can order copies i dont know
there telephone number is 01332 255393. hope this helps.
if you need any further help identifying the line i will try my best to help you
