The Norfolk Surnames List has moved and is now maintained by David Booty. The new URL is:
http://uk.geocities.com/davidbooty@btinternet.com/NorfolkSurnames/Index.html
There will be lots of out-of-date information on the list and it will take a long time to update it, but still worth checking every now and then.

For transcripts of Norfolk Parish Registers of North East Norfolk, try the Parish Register Transcription Society (http://www.parishchest.com/en-gb/dept_4321.html), they have almost 100 PR's and AT's which cover Baptisms, Marriages and Burials.
These are all available in micro fiche format or on CD, also they have a 'Look up' facility were they will search through all their transcripts and give advise on genealogy problems.

Haven't found too many with the surname I'm looking for yet - though I still have a lot of the registers to check - but just knowing that it will be a complete waste of time checking in abc parish register for xyz years makes the purchase of anything like this extremely cost effective.

Now, if you were to have some Cornish ancestry, I could probably help you.

Now, if you were to have some Cornish ancestry, I could probably help you. That's a lovely offer Bo Peep, and I do thank you, but the nearest I've found so far is great-granddad's second wife. (His first wife died aged 30, shortly after giving birth to their 4th -known - child.) Mary was from Madron, great granddad from Norfolk. I think they met in Bethnal Green (her mother seems to have died there Dec quarter 1904 not long before great-granny died at the beginning of January 1905), they married in Tynemouth in 1912, moved to Yarmouth, Cornwall, Newcastle on Tyne, and back to Cornwall by the end of 1919, collecting 5 kids along the way.
The amazing thing is that I only found out by chance a few years ago that great granddad had married twice. I was visiting auntie and we were comparing some photos we had, when suddenly there was 'Oh that's a photo of granddad's second wife. Can't remember her name, but they lived in Penzance and I used to write to her'.

Geoffers |hug|,
I think I had already found this URL in a previous life, but it's always good to be reminded, because something that wasn't relevant or didn't 'connect' last year can be highly relevant this year. And that's exactly what's happened. The Robert and James Empson in the Probate section are members of 'my' Empsons - and as you are always saying, the wills give lots of information.
However, the directory section has given me a headache. :) Who is John Empson Toplis POLLARD named after? His father is the vicar of St Lawrence South Walsham, and in 1861 an Elizabeth TOPLIS is living in the village and listed as a fundholder. So were she and possibly Robert Empson, dealer in skins, largely responsible for the appointment of George Cox Pollard (John's father) as vicar?
I haven't got time to pursue this query at the moment, but it's a lesson to everyone to search directories because you never know what little clues (or intrigues :D) you might find.

Go back to 1851 and at HO107/1819 f234 p9 you will fidn that the previous Rector at South Walsham St.Lawrence was John TOPLIS, who was then aged 75. Presumably John E T POLLARD received the Toplis bit from him?
Either John Toplis was popular or George thought it either a nice thing to do, or good politic.
Can't help with the EMSPON part of his name at the moment, the Robert EMPSON you mention was in North Walsham, so possibly he is not connected. Any Empson churchwardens or benefactors?

As ever, Geoffers to the rescue with a Norfolk question. :D Thank you.
Seems as if I was sort-of on the right lines with the Toplis connection, though still haven't a clue about the Empson one. Certainly hadn't thought about a churchwarden. I'll investigate more later in the year when I will hopefully have a little more time.
