One more site which you can use to view old tithe and enclosure maps, old and new photos and 1st series OS maps. You can even overlay old and new maps to compare the two.

Another good resource for old and new photos of Norfolk (and other counties) is the English Heritage viewfinder site:

Dear Geoffers,
I really must say #thank you#, not only to yourself, but to all the 'old hands' who put these wonderful web addresses up on the site! For newbies like myself they offer not only such good research possibilities but lots of added interest. I do sometimes get rather carried away looking at some of them and forget all about the research that I am supposed to be doing! Once again, thanks a million! |bowdown|

Glad to pass on what I've picked up and found helpful - there is a lot of useful stuff for Norfolk on the web.

To everyone out there, if you're stuck - ask. Don't feel foolish, because you think that everyone must know the answer - I'm sure that all of those who have been interested in family history for any length of time are pleased to try and help those with less experience.

I'd love to see these Norfolk forums really busy, with lots of people posting and answering queries - putting in their experience so that we can all benefit. I'm happy to try and answer as much as I can, and if I don't know the answer, then hopefully one of my 850+ books may provide a clue.

For those not aware, Norfolk Libraries have a good web-site:

http://norlink.norfolk.gov.uk/cgi-bin/viewpoint-server-web.sh

This has links to photographs of many places in Norfolk, which can be enlarged and downloaded to your hard-drive (they may not be published without permission though) - also a search engine which can be used to find elusive books.

Thanks to lizziebeth for this
( copied and pasted from her post )

Some of you researching Norfolk Ancestors may already be familiar with this, but i hope this information may be of help to someone. On our regional news programme tonight, they did a feature about NAOMI, which is :- National Archive Of Memorial Inscriptions. Their aim is to record details from gravestones in all uk burial grounds. Quite a task!! To date they have managed to do an admirable job in Norfolk, and have recorded details from some 200 burial grounds there. To visit their site, and find out which burial grounds have been covered so far, go to:- www.memorialinscriptions.org.uk.

Hope someone finds this information useful.

No information yet. Andrew knows about the technical side, whereas I hit it with a hammer. He will keep the web-site going for as long as he can and the decision about who takes on the site must be his. I do not wish to pressure that chap for reasons which I will not disclose. As soon as I know anything, the only place that I will post a message is on the British-Genealogy Norfolk forum, so it's worth checking back now and then.

Thanks Geoffers, I'll keep watching. Only discovered yesterday that there might be a problem. A keyword search for NTA had come up with a "parsing error" message for the transcription index pages, and no other info. I must have a look for the cached historical pages website which someone posted fairly recently.

Hi Frank,
Try
http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.genealogy.doun.org/transcriptions/index.php

(The URL which I posted in the 'NTA access problems' thread - last posted to 27 July 2005 - was specific to one of the dates on the options list.)

Hi Pam
Thanks for the URL. Could'nt remember it, but found it via Google earlier today, and had a quick look to try the archived NTA pages. Well worth a look for all those who are suffering withdrawal symptoms for the NTA data.

Is there any further news re the NTA website?
As promised, you'll read it here first. We've decided to hand the NTA over to Rootchat. I've no idea of the technical side of things or how long this will take, that's all dealt with by Andrew. But, it will remain free access. When I know a new URL, I'll post it here.

For transcripts of Norfolk Parish Registers of North East Norfolk, try the Parish Register Transcription Society (http://www.parishchest.com/en-gb/dept_4321.html), they have almost 100 PR's and AT's which cover Baptisms, Marriages and Burials.
Also they have a 'Look up' facility were they will search through all their transcripts and give advise on genealogy problems.

PamSadly, the above site has been hacked.
The old URL of norfolkhistory is too recent to be accessed via the Wayback Machine.
I'll let you know of any change of situation.

Of course, there is also FreeREG at http://www.freereg.org.uk/ (http://www,freereg.org.uk/) if you are looking for a source of information on parish register entries.
