As per my reply to your message on the Lancashire board, could you provide a little more information please? Date(s), sources which you've tried.

Using verbal information as a guide is useful. But you do need to confirm this with some form of evidence, information passed down verbally through several generations often becomes corrupted. Do you have any certificates/census returns showing their occupations - or if this is pre-1837, do you have some other source of the information, apprencticeship indentures, appointment of freemen, directories, wills, etc? Metalsmith, covers several occuaptions.

My best source of information so far is my Mother and her sisters and brothers as their father and grandfather are the names I gave.
Otherwise, no; I don't have such data.
However, I can tell you exactly their dates because I know them.
I can obtain burial certificates from Cincinnati for several Ashforths.

Then you need to obtain the source information before proceeding further.
You will need to begin with trying to locate the birth certificate of your grandfather. If you're not familiar with how the system of civil registration works and how to locate and order a certificate, please ask. A birth certificate (in England and Wales) will include where and when someone was born; the full name(s) of the person born, the name(s) of the parents, including the mother's maiden name, the father's occupation.

If your grandfather was born in the UK prior to 1901, then he may appear in a census return which may show other siblings and give the ages of his parents. From the ages of the parents and children, you should be able to narrow down a period in which to look for their marriage certificate. If you get your gt-grandparents marriage certificate, this will show their names, ages, marital state, address (not always very accurate), fathers' names and occupations and names of witnesses.
From there, you can trace the family back through census returns and other birth and marriage certificates. It's a long process.
As I mentioned, if you're not sure how to look for references in the GRO indices and then how to order certificates, please ask.

Very sorry - forgot to thank you.
Robert Ashforth, my great, great grandfather, was born in Dudley, Worcester, England. After he married - or even maybe before - he lived in Birmingham, Warwick, England. The 1881 British Census shows him living at 139 Gerrard St.; Aston, Warwick, England.
I'm not sure "Charles" was his father; perhaps his father was "?".
