Father was Billy (William?) Allan Roll, also known as big Al. Sister was Katherine or Catherine (born 31 Jan 1893, unconfirmed). Not sure if Charles was born in Ashington, Northumberland, England. It could have been Cowpen. Born 9 December 1894. Lived in Ashington and was a coal miner.
Would appreciate any help or confirmation to anyone with access to the censuses.

I think this must be your ROLL family in 1901:

Address: Kitty Brewster, Cowpen

Wm ROLE Head 48 Miner born Norfolk
Mary Anne ROLE Wife 39 born Choppington, Northumberland
William ROLE Son 14 born Bebisle R?, Northumberland
Janet? Ellenor ROLE Daughter 12 born Bebisle R?, Northumberland

Will now look for them in earlier censuses...

The ROLLs are at a different address in 1881 and William's wife is named Sarah. You can look them up at www.familysearch.org (http://www.familysearch.org/). RG11/5116 Folio 115.

Finding 18 year old William ROLL in 1871 is a bit more difficult. He could be in Northumberland or maybe he's still in Norfolk or perhaps somewhere else altogether. But I do see one which -- except for his first name -- fits the bill quite well:

Address: Horton, Northumberland
Charles ROLL Head 48, Coal Miner born Hindringham, Norfolk
Mary Ann ROLL Wife 45 born Hindringham, Norfolk
James William ROLL Son 18 Coal Miner, born Morston, Norfolk
John Robert ROLL Son 15 Coal Miner born Morston, Norfolk
George Edward Son 9 born Cramlington, Northumberland

RG10/5134 Folio 53

Charles ROLL Head 39 Coal Miner born Hindringham, Norfolk
Mary Ann ROLL Wife 36 born Hindringham, Norfolk
James W. ROLL Son 7 Scholar born Hindringham, Norfolk
John R. ROLL Son 4 Scholar born Hindringham, Norfolk

You will have to confirm the census entries by hunting down brth and marriage certificates; but if the entries that Trish has kindly provided do end up being your family, then the 1851 census transcript shows Charles (aged 39 in the 1861 census entry) as follows::

Charles RALL, hd, mar, 28, lab, Hindringham

There are several other ROLL families with a connection to Hindringham in teh 1851 census, these are:

Hi Brad,

You can't search on Family Search using census references.

Just go to the site Trish gave you and select "Search". Enter William Roll, Event type Birth, Year 1853, give it a spread of 2 years just to be sure and narrow it down to England.

Click on Search and then look in the results under the category 1881 census for William Roll, Born Hindringham and click on his name.

(The reference Trish gave you will appear on the bottom of the Individual Record screen that comes up.)

To see all the family present just click on "Household" to the right of William Rolls name.

Oh, sorry, Brad -- for not warning you advance. Now you know, it is addictive. Very addictive. Obsessive, even. No matter how much you dig up, it will never be enough.

I trust you were able to access the 1881 info with Procat's help. Also, did you get the info I sent directly to you? The 1841 and 1851 census info from Geoffers should be invaluable to you as well.

Good luck!
Trish

Thank you both for your help. I managed to get the info after I had found it via another route, Google - PRO - A2A - Ancesrty.com 1881.

I did get the info that you sent directly to me, double thanks Trish.

In a fortnight I will do some digging at the Family Records Centre in London, I have done my homework there and know all about the colour coding of their archive books.

You will no doubt be hearing from me when I start on the other branches, hehe!

E-mail me when you get the chance.
