I subscribed to a quarterly subscription to Ancestry and being of Scottish descent and wanting to get the most from my money ! said to someone i have worked with for over 20 years that i would look her lot up (Liell) on the census. Her family were based in East London mine in Essex ( i know there not that far apart depending on which parts !) I found that our Great Grandparents lived smack bang next door to each other in 1891 in Tilbury !

Just thought id bore you all with that

A few years ago I was searching through the 1841 census for Marylebone as a relative of mine baptised 2 children there in the 1830's. I stopped to see how far I had got through the reel when I noticed the name at the top of the page. It was Ulyet, the name of my friend back home in Worcestershire. I wrote it down to show him when I returned as it is an unusual name. About 5 years later my friend asked me to research his family for him, he knew his father was from Kent but that was all. Yes, you've all quessed it by now, the one on the 1841 census was his 3x gt grandfather. I have had several strange occurrences like this during my years of research, perhaps our dead ancestors do guide us!! Mind you, that said, my Samuel Boaz who died in 1765 has refused to point out his birth place to me over the last 25 years!

I've another one like that. I married my husband, a Scot 5 years ago and had always been the butt of many jokes around his family dining table because of my 'course' STAINES accent compared to their melodic scottish one.

I was tracing his family back and yes you've guessed it found them in 1871 living right up the road in Staines where I come from - oh how I laughed!!

On a more informational note, can anyone shed any light as to why a Scottish tea merchant may have moved to Staines from Elgin in the 1870's??

Cheers
