I notice no one has posted anything to this forum yet so may I start by suggesting an excellent book on canals.
Hadfield's British Canals (The Inland Waterways of Britain & Ireland).
This book brings to life the story of the canals of Britain, with many maps and illustrations, from their inception to their decline.
For anyone with an interest in canals or transport it is a must.

Always looking for info on the KNIGHT line of law abiding boatmen (well ok,just boatmen will do!). Kicked off in Banbury/Neithrop in the 1820's and by 1871 were in Birmingham in a boat called Jimmy.

The National Waterways Museum at Gloucester Docks has old documentation concerning (some of) the carrying companies. I'm not sure how (or if) you can get to the info, if you want to follow this up. For those with an interest in Inland Waterways history this museum in a 3-storey warehouse is a 'must'. DaveD
