I have completed this branch of my family from 1881 forward but l keep returning because of a couple of brickwalls before 1881 so here goes.
Sarah Barney married Francisco Travi b abt 1854 Italy, in 1882 but were living as man and wife in 1881 census, on marriage cert Sarah is spinster age 22 with father George Barney a Carpenter. Sarah's age varies on further census fron 1857-1860. but l cannot find birth or census refering to Sarah and family before 1881She put her mark so she was illiterate and my only idea is that she was a foundling and the people who took her in named her hence no birth record and she made her father up.She had 6 children from 1881 onwards and all cert say Sarah Barney mother (slight variation on 1)but my Grandfather Francis Travi b 1877 and his brother Charles b 1879 we cannot find any birth cert (Charles grandaughter has also had this problem when sh researched her line) so why were they not registered. Francisco Travi was the only Travi to come to Uk and all the Travi in Uk started with him, he is not on 1871 census so assumed he arrived after that date or didnot go on census but no record of Francisco before 1881.
Please can someone help.

Sarah Barney married Francisco Travi b abt 1854 Italy, in 1882 .Hello simone - welcome to Brit-Gen,

What is your source for the marriage, please? I have had a look at FreeBMD and the closest that I can find is the marriage record for a Sarah BARNEY and on the same page is a Francis TRAVIS. This was in the September quarter of 1882 in the Holborn registration district, volume 1b, page 1095. If this is the correct reference for the marriage that you hold, then it looks like Francisco anglicised his name. In that case, have you searched for any births of the children under TRAVIS rather than TRAVI?

Working on the assumption that like many of my ancestors ages were something to be dreamt up when the census chap arrived I searched the birth records between 1850 and 1865, and there are 4 possibles:

Last name First name(s) Registration district County Registered year Month / quarter
BARNEY Sarah Milton Kent 1850 Apr-May-Jun
BARNEY Sarah Ann Rebekah Aston Warwickshire 1856 Oct-Nov-Dec
BARNEY Sarah Ashby de la Zouch Leicestershire 1862 Oct-Nov-Dec
BARNEY Sarah Elizabeth Hull Yorkshire 1865 Oct-Nov-Dec

I also search the 1861 Census for a George Barney (inc. name variations) working as a carpenter and resident in Middlesex/London, and the only results produced are 3 Geroge BARNES.

If you look at the Registration Index for their marriage in 1882 her husband is listed as FRANCIS TRAVIS.

her husband is listed as FRANCIS TRAVIS.

In the marriage register, it is clearly TRAVI.

Thanks for your reply,
I have seen these Sarah's and discarded them as my Sarah always said she was from Clerkenwell, lwill look again though and try and follow them through.
Will also look at George Barns in 1861 but why was Barney continually used on certs ect.
Orig marriage cert is Travi.
