Hi,
My great grandfather, John James De Mello was born in 1854 but I'm not sure of the country-maybe Portugal or Brazil though people in our family say they came from Viana do Castelo in Portugal.
He married Beatrice Christiana Martin on 16.5.1877 in Madras, India and lived and I presume, worked on Hope Estate (coffee), Belmont, Coonor in the Nilgiri hills of Tamil Nadu. They buried a son, George Hope there in the plantation cemetery on 17.8.1885. They had many other sons, one of whom was my grandfather.
John James died in Rangoon, Burma on 9.11.1911.
Can anyone please help me to find out how to trace his country of birth. Quite possible that he had a Portuguese name and anglicized it in India. I've been hunting for this for years!!
