View Full Version : Whittaker
My grandfather is Donald Gregson Whittaker who immigrated to Canada from Northwich in 1925. On his papers its list Isacc Whittaker as his father and the address is 49 "Foot" (not sure of word) Ave, Rudheath Park, Northwich. I cannot find anything on Isacc or his first or second wife. I do know that Frank is a son from his first wife and Donald and at least 2 sisters were born to the second wife who's last name may have been Miller. I have tried Northwich, Cheshire Co. Is my county wrong.
I would appreciate any help or information. Thanks in advance.

Whit,
I can see that Isaac and Frank WHITTAKER are still with the Jackson family in the 1901 census -- but this time, Isaac is listed as a brother-in-law to the head of the family and Frank is a nephew. So it probably [but not certainly] follows that Isaac WHITTAKER and Mary JACKSON are brother and sister.

Mary E. JACKSON Wife 41 born Congleton, Cheshire

In the 1881 census, there is an Isaac WHITTAKER, born in 1858 in Marton, Cheshire, who is working as a farm servant in Macclesfield, Cheshire. [Reference: RG11/3498 Folio 23]
In the 1871 census, this same Isaac WHITTAKER, age 13, is with his parents, Josiah, 50, an ag. labourer, born in North Rode, Cheshire, and Hannah WHITTAKER, 47, born in Gawsworth, Cheshire. They are living on ?Pexhill Road, Henbury, Cheshire. [Reference: RG10/3678 Folio 99]

If Jno is A brother in law to Isaac then either Jno or Mary's could be Isaac dead wife's brother or sister as I do not know the name of his first wife or as you said Mary may be Isaac's sister. Where Mary and Isacc were born in the same place then they should be in an earlier census together with there parents and other family members. Is there an easy way to get on the census in England as any that I have been able to get into Isacc is not there. It is hard to know his date of birth as in the 1891 census he is 34 and only 37 in the 1901 census. Do you know if Mary is in the 1871 census.
In the 1901 census Isaac is listed as being born in Congleton, Cheshire and in the 1881 census he is listed as being born in Marton, Cheshire. Do you know if these two places are close to each other or considered the same area.
Thanks for help and all the information.
Lynne
Hello
I just found an Isaac married to a Harriet Lea in 1883, two years before Frank was born and a Jno Matthew Jackson (Which is who Isaac is listed as a lodger) married to a Mary Ellen Lea so Isaac and Jno were married to sisters.

Hi Lynne
This info may not have been online in the summer as freeBMD is being continually updated:
Donald Gregson Whittaker born June quarter 1907 Northwich volume 8a page 252.
Isaac Hall Whittaker married June quarter 1901 Warrington 8c 329. Mary Ann Mannion & Milly Pemberton listed on the same page. The 1901 census was 31st March, just before the June quarter.
I have just found that there are some early records for Marton on a film reel at my local library: christenings, burials & marriages 1536-1812; christenings 1813-1837; burials 1813-1846. However, there are 2 Martons in Cheshire & I do not know which one they are from.

In the 1881 census, there's a Mary Ellen LEA born about 1860 living with her family -- parents and 6 siblings in Wornish Nook, Somerford Booths, Cheshire. [Reference RG11/3535 Folio 32 Page 13]
No Harriet in the LEA household in 1881, but there is a Harriet LEA, born abut 1856 in Someford [sic], working as a domestic servant in another household -- that of a farmer named James HAGUE -- in Gawsworth, Cheshire. [Reference RG11/3498 Folio 14 Page 5 -- note that Issac WHITTAKER is in the same census area in the 1881 census]
I don't see a match for a LEA family containing daughters named Mary and Harriett born about 1856 and early 1860ish, respectively, in the 1871 census...
