Hi am trying to trace 2 different lines of my family, Have Scotlands from Liverpool area classed as Mariner and Master Mariner, then later as rope maker. Would this be normal?? would old age or injury forced his change of profession???
Then have John Patrick Callaghan classed as Seaman in Liverpool in 1865, how would I know which was merchant navy, royal navy or just ferry man or fisherman??? Does the title given provide clues to which branch of sailing they are from???

Quite possibly retired from going to sea and worked in the dockyards.

Can you find the chap in earlier or later census returns to confirm where he worked as a seaman. For those who served in the Royal Navy, records I've used include the letters R.N; so it might be that he was in the Merchant fleet which would include fishermen. If he could have been a seaman before 1857, searching for him is easier. For 1853 - 1857 use the alphabetically listed registers in BT116. The National Archives web-site has several research guides to assist.

Hi nearly a year to the day, and I think I have found him on the 1861 census, on a barge called Wallace,(British ships in home ports) the vessel is classed as foreign, and the crew are an english and irish mix. Would an irish barge be classed as foreign? I have googled etc, but cannot find anything.
What are the chances of finding details of a barge?
Cheers

You could try contacting the Boat Museum at Ellesmere Port for inland boats & barges http://www.boatmuseum.org.uk/index.htm . Or the Liverpool Maritime Museum for all others http://www.liverpoolmuseums.org.uk/maritime/ .
