I've heard of a book "A pedigree of Stapleton of Greasley, Basford and Nottingham" by Alfred Stapleton, published 1927.
My local library say the only copy they know about is a reference copy in Nottingham university. I’ve discovered that it could be made available in Family History Centers on microfilm but I’m a long way from the nearest center, living in the UK.
Does anyone know the whereabouts of a copy - at this point I am still wondering if it has information to help me with my Stapleton research. TIA for any suggestions. Les

Hi Lesli, I have never heard of such a book, but will be on the lookout for it as I am researching the stapleton line. At present I am researching in the Basford area, but I beleive my stapleton line comes from Greasley. I am myself a stapleton born in Nottm but now living in New Zealand. My grandfather was Samuel james Stapleton born in nottm 1895 and great grandfather samuel stapleton born in nottm 1849, G,G, grandfather was John stapleton and I think this is where I go to Greasley he was born approx 1824 ? I still have to confirm that last stapleton. Are you researching any of these or their relatives ? Happy hunting ! Lizz.

You don't say where you are so it's hard to advise. If you don't want to go to Nottingham and what you want is available through the Mormons, the general approach is to
(a) find it in the catalogue and make a note of the details
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHLC/frameset_fhlc.asp
(b) find you nearest family history centre http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHC/frameset_fhc.asp
(c) phone to check opening times
(d) go and order the film
(e) wait for it to come in and then go and look at it.
However, I'd strongly advise you to get a fair bit of research done yourself before looking at someone else's ideas. Being unduly influenced by someone else's ideas, particularly before you're in a position to make a judgement on how reliable it is, is definitely not a good idea.

I am also trying to trace my late husband's name, Stapleton.
His family is from Ireland (Cork and Tipperary). If anyone is into the "Irish
Stapletons" I'd love to hear from you (email).

Lizz, Been doing a bit more digging and may have some details of your STAPLETON ancestors mentioned but need to check a bit more - like who each married, before being certain. Can you email me at "the ostrich at tiscali dot co dot uk" (- take out the spaces etc ! ) I did trace a copy of that book but it turned out not to be very useful, after all. Regards, Les in Cornwall, UK.

Hi I have just discovered that my Great Great Grandfather John Stapleton was born in 1824 in Greasley, Nottinghamshire. His wife was called Hannah and according to the 1871 cenus he had 4 children William 27, Joseph (my Great grandfather), Lydia and Henry. I think that John Stapleton was a Framework Knitter, but William and Joseph worked in the mines. Could this John Stapleton be the same as yours? Hoping so Lesley in Chipping Sodbury, UK stuart<at>nunn5222<dot>fsnet<dot>co<dot>uk

Hi Lesley, sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Can you send me some more info on your stapletons ? My John Stapleton married a Hannah Fox in 1847. I have their marriage cert. John Stapleton was born in Greasley in 1824, when I came over to the UK recently I sighted a copy of his baptism in the archives office in notts. I will try and dig out what other info I recorded at the same time. Lizz.

Hi Lizzie. My John Stapleton, my great great grandfather, was born in Greasley in 1824 and married a Hannah who was born in 1822. They had at least 4 children William, Joseph (my great grandfather),Lydia and Henry.
His father was William Stapleton born in 1803
According to another tree, which I do fit into, William was married to either an Amy or Ann Fox but I am unable to trace the line back further, though this tree does say his father was a John Stapleton married to an Elizabeth Kendall but I cannot make the link myself. Lesley

hi lesley, I will try and email you directly. I know which tree you mean, as I have also seen it. I too am suffering some confusion with the other family tree which you name. My John Stapleton married a Hannah Fox. I have traced them on the 1861 census in notts living with Hannahs parents. At this time Hannah and John had William aged 3, and my g g grandfather who was Samuel, he was aged 1 on the 1861 census. Will write some more soon. lizz
