A sibling of Karl Oskar was - like his brother also a mariner.
He came to England and in 1868 [3rd q.] married a Cornish lass - Mary Elvins Furse. Their 1st born - 1869 [1st q,] - was named Charles Henry.
The 1871 census has Mary as married [no spouse in house] living with her son. Adolf had recently been to Cornwall as Mary was pregnant. In 3rd q, 1871 she gave birth to a daughter - named Frederica Wilhelmina.
Adolf made another visit to Cornwall in 1873 and in 2nd q. 1874 Mary gave birth to another daughter - named Mary.
Sadly for the mother, both girls died - Frederica in 1875 and Mary in 1877.
The 1881 census has Mary along with Charles still claiming to be married and living with her widowed mother.
I cannot find Mary or Charles in the 1891 census.
In 1894 Charles marries Sarah Mary Brock in Farnham and in 1895 they have a daughter named Frederica Mary. Some time thereafter they move to Devon and take up residence in Stokenteighnhead where Charles is a Boat Builder. This is where they are and his mother is now with family - 1901 census. She is described as a widow.Charles dies shortly after the census.
Mary dies in Cornwall in 1918.
Was she really a widow or did Adolf, like his brother, Karl Oskar, perform a runner?

Perhaps Adolf died at sea? Public Records Office at Kew may be of assistance as it holds such records..

Yes, this looks correct. The occupation though is somewhat different - Boot Salesman - from that which I felt was the occupation in 1901. Rather than being a Boat Builder, could he have just been working for a Boat Builder? The village in Devon from what I have seen from a 'visit' by Google would have supported such a trade.
Do any records exist of such businesses in that area?

Colin, I think the occupation in 1901 is a boot maker, not a boat builder.

I agree - must have had one too many 'wobbly-pops' that day when I noted the the occupation.
Sorry for the confusion

While the age is wrong - 40 instead of 50 - this may be correct.
I'll look into this further.

I am satisfied that she was born in the Oct.-Dec. q. 1840 vol. 9 page 25. She was registered as an un-named female with the surname Furse. Her parents married around the same time as her birth occurred.
The family is on the 1841 census living on Church Street, Mevagissey and her father was a Labourer.

Thanks valg.
Can these be searched on-line?
If not what would be the best way for me to find out given that I'm a fair distance away from Kew? :helpsmilie:

Hi Colin, I know what it is like to have to search online for UK records, living in Australia I am also limited to searching online or writing emails..I would email them, they do hold deaths at sea records, you can contact them online at their website

Its as good a place as any to start, Adolf must have been at sea a lot as he was not on census records. Best of luck.

Still thinking this is the same Mary as I cant find a Mary that fits this one on any other census, maybe she dropped her age to get the job! The gentleman she is working for is on the 1901 census living with family.
