My Great-grandmother was Mary Jane MEES daughter of James MEES and Esther COOMBS. She was born in Watley, Somerset on 12th June 1852. She married Edwin WILCOX at Whatley on 7th April 1874. He was a coal miner. They lived for some time in Coleford where my grandmother Annie Elder was born c1886. I cannot find her birth registration. The family eventually settled in Cwmtillery, Monmouthshire. Sometime, possibly during the 1920's Mary Jane was taken back to Somerset by another daughter Louisa Jane (know as Jinny) who was married to a Thomas Bateman. He was also born in Coleford. They had three sons Thomas, Francis and Albert. I do not know where in Somerset they went to live. I have been unable to find a death for her. I would like to find out where and when Mary Jane died. All I know about her death is that it was during the winter as the weather was too bad for her family to travel from Wales.
Can anyone help?

Just before we get onto Mary Jane ...

If I have the right family, the 1891 census shows them living in Ashwick, Somerset, with 5-year-old Annie born in Midsomer Norton.
RG12/1911 folio 64 page 10 (held by TNA, Crown copyright)
If Annie was born in Midsomer Norton rather than Coleford, perhaps this?
Births
Jun Qtr 1886
WILLCOX Annie Hilda
Clutton 5c 585
You may want to try that birth certificate first?
I think you have cracked it Kerrywood...
From bathbmd.org.uk....1886, WILLCOX, Annie Hilda, sub-district Midsomer Norton, registers at Bath, mother maiden name: MEASE, MSN/32/333

Are Thomas BATEMAN and Louisa JANE in the 1901 census here --> RG13/4936; Folio: 52; Page: 24
If so, then going by the 1911 census I think the surname could be BAYNTON rather than BATEMAN. 1911: RG14/31840 SN 89
There is this death for a Louisa J BAYNTON in Somerset...
Death Mar 1959 Norton Radstock 7C 212
BAYNTON, Louisa J
Age 85
Est. birth date: 1876
Note: There is also a death for a Thomas BAYNTON in 1950 in the same district.
So could this be her mother...
Death Mar 1947 Norton Radstock 7C 253
WILLCOX, Mary J
Age 95
Est birth date: 1852
Will investigate some more.
..... and a death of Mary Jane WILLCOX, 1947, age 95, subRD; Norton Radstock Clutton, Bath, NRC/5/056 (from freebmd, march quarter 1947)

Kerrywood and Mona, yes think you have cracked it. I've been looking for years for that birth but was told her name as Annie Elder and seen it written down by my uncle and father. Always puzzled me as rather an odd name! I thought that would be my clue to finding her. She married as just Annie but her death was registed as Annie E. However Hilda sounds pretty close and as Mona says the mother's maiden name is given as Mease(pretty close) I think that is the clincher. It was her mothers death I was really after so this is real bonus!
I was told by my aunt who lived with her that she was born in Coleford, Somerset. I too saw that Midsummer Norton census entry but in the 1901 she is given as being born in Coleford, Glos, just to add confusion and then of course I was not looking for a Annie Hilda! Thanks both of you.

Yes that is them in 1901. That BATEMAN/BAYNTON name change is spooky. Dad told me the name was BATEMAN and that is how I found them in 1901. Couldn't find the marriage (still can't) under either name. Just checked back to 1871 and he is in Coleford as BAYNTON. Was using the name BATEMAN to try and find Thomas and Louisa deaths to try and locate an area of Somerset for them.
Now I know why I could not find anything. That death looks good. I was checking WILCOX and WILLCOX varients but must have missed that one. Many thanks.

Just an update to you kind people who helped me with Annie's birth and Mary's death. Both certificates have arrived and are correct. I still can't get over Annie Elder being Annie Hilda. Perhaps her mother said Annie Elder and the Registrar misheard and thought she said Hilda. Mary put her mark so maybe she could not read and would not have known.
