Rod said in a message, that it would be nice if BG Forum Members posted some photos in messages, I'm going to give it a shot ..... and hope it works!
My husband's Gt. Grandfather, Frederick James Grant-Salmon, owned a few Pubs, but the Graving Dock Tavern is the only one for which I have any photographs. The original Pub, (built whenever!) was demolished, but another one was erected on exactly the same site with the same name. I do have photos of this later one, taken in 1986 ..... but here is a photo of the Original Gantry which was also erected outside the *new one*.
In my next message are details from Directories ..... my understanding is, that Horace was the licensee until approximately 1950, then his son Ronald ran the Pub, but the license was possibly in the name of Horace's widow, Elizabeth .... still trying to confirm this info.

Well done Diane - it worked! :D
Nice piccie.
Before I try anything like that, I first have to figure out how to put a piccie on my web site, a web site I've never used |blush| !

Hi Linda,
It's easy to do, thanks to Rod's instructions ...... also the icon you click to insert the link is exactly the same icon as MSN Groups. ;)
You don't say what your web space/web site is, but if it's any help, mine is with Geocities ...... a freebie courtesy of BT Internet, or BT Yahoo as they now call themselves. :(

Me too! My site is with Rootsweb, and although I have no problems with uploading the files, I've always baulked at the idea of pictures. I `want' to add pictures, and I have some scanned ready, but I haven't had the `courage' to try yet. But....I think I'll have a bash now, seeing as a `kind person' sent me a couple of good books showing me how. ;) Armed with that and Rod's instructions, it `should' be a doddle!!
Well done Diane, liked the pictures!

See what I mean? It brings it all alive!
And....
1. you just can't do that on a mailing list
2. the thread will stay here so that people can read it in its proper sequence. All nicely visible. Much better than isolated mailing list emails.
Cheers

I got a surprise email in my inbox this morning, a contact via Ian Hunter's web site re The Graving Dock Tavern, which was owned by my husband's family. Below is a snippet from a Census, as Frederick Grant-Salmon was 'lolling around at home' in the 1890's! ;)
CENSUS APRIL 1891 Ref: RG12/1316/58/6
Dwelling: Graving Dock Tavern, North Woolwich Road, Silvertown, Essex
Joseph F. HART (35) Head Marr Public House Manager b. Harwich, Essex
Ada MADDISE (17) Niece Single Servant Domestic b. Dovercourt, Essex
My contact is the Grandson of Ada above, asking if I have any photos of the original Pub, unfortunately, the only one I have was taken of someone standing on the roof, so just a brick wall in the background.
However, I do know that it was a green-tiled Victorian building and a new Pub with the same name, was rebuilt on the original site about 1960. However, the sad news is that it's now been demolished and I've just found this: |shakehead
* Silvertown Quays - a large new housing development is to be built on the site and by the looks of things the work could be starting soon. Part of the development will be the 'Aquarium' which will be more or less where the Graving Dock Tavern stood.*
