Difficult to be specific without more information.
Try these for size-
A general term for someone who move tubs or wagons in a mine; couples or uncouples the tubs ; in particular denotes underground pony drivers.

Drives a horse drawn vehicle used for haulage (modern day lorry driver)

There are many specific types of haulier from mine, quarries, boats timber etc. but they all tend to drive some type of cart for bulk loads as oppossed to the carrier who carries loads made up of numerous smaller but diffrent items.

Out of passing interest, what do you call a haulier in Australia? Looking at a few Australian websites it appears to be in comtemporary use.

The definition in a (British) English dictionary is simply "a person or company employed in the commercial transport of goods by road".

Beyond that, as Guy suggested, context is all important.

Well that tells you something. The job wasn't involved with mining, for example. It can also be instructive to check what sort of jobs the neighbours did.
