Hi I'm hoping someone out there is aquainted with this home. My Grandfather Henry Brown was sent from this home in 1903 leaving Liverpool on April 2nd. He landed in Halifax on April 10th 1903 . He was a British Home Child. Is there still records and if there is, is it possible to search these? Where was the home situated? etc.
My Grandfather was orphaned but still had two sisters that remained in England. He was born April 13 1891. His parents names were Henry Brown and Mary Elizabeth Brown(former Daley).
Any Information would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you.

Hello Shelley,
Have you contacted Manchester Archives regarding this home?
I do have details of a Manchester and Salford Reformatory located in Blackley, Manchester - but don't know if this is the same as your query.
Let us know what Manchester Archives tell you, plz
All the best, Jan

Hi Jan,
I have discovered through the Salford Library that this home was one of quite a few run by Leonard K Shaw. Numbers 2 to 12 on George street were all orphan homes. My Grandfather was in No. 6. It was listed in the Slater's Trade Directory of which a kind Lady at the Library looked up for me.
If any pictures of this street with these homes turn up I would be greatly appreciated. It's a long shot.
Actual documentation has not showed up any where I have searched so far on this home. I do know that the Manchester library does not hold any of these records.
Thank you so much for your reply.

Hi Shelley
Don't know if this is of any use but if you look on www.images.manchester.gov.uk and type George St, Salford in the search box, there is a photo of the children of George Street on there. Good Luck, Anne

Hi Shelley
I have just taken up a post of Archivist/Records Manager at a Noth-west based charity called the Boys and Girls Welfare Society.
Your message is of great interest to me and I may be able to help. The Leonard K. Shaw you mention was the man that founded this charity and the home that you are looking for were run by us. At present (and we are hoping to change this) we have a very limited number of case files accessible of children in our care from this period. A very quick search has shown there to have been two boys by the name of Henry Brown.
We also have a number of unnamed old photographs, some of which may be of George Street.
If you would like me to take this further may I suggest that you get in contact with me.
Hope this helps
Toby
