I am trying to trace my grandmother's side of the family. Her name was Lillian Johnson (d.o.b. 1883), and her father was Samuel Johnson. She also had a brother William and a sister whose name I don't know. On December 25, 1906 Lillian married William Hadley. At that time her family was living at #4 Dibble Rd. in Smethwick. Samuel is listed as a blacksmith on the marriage certificate. Does anyone have any information on this family. So far I have been unable to trace them, even through census records.

Hello David, I dont know if this will come to any use but my G X 3 grandfather was living in Smethwick In 1861, now he was a roll turner but most of the sons went into iron work of some kind , He had a son Samual born 1841, but that is only census I have him on but he had 3 older brothers and they all used the same family name ,,, the only thing I can say is if I give you the 1841 census details of this family you might find link coming forwar

This looks as if it could be Samuel in the 1901 census of Smethwick:

RG13/2823, folio 55, page 15
96 Sabell Road

Samuel J JOHNSON Head Widr 40 Blacksmith - General War B'ham
Alice do Daur S 16 do do
John W do Son S 14 ? Metal Worker do do
+ 4 Boarders by the name of WILLIAMS

Using the above information, I have found Samuel on the 1891 census of Kings Norton Worcestershire:

RG12/2352, folio 121, page 39
2 Sherborne Grove

Samuel J JOHNSON Head M 31 Blacksmith Warwicks Birmingham
Sarah J do Wife M 29 do do
Lilly do Daur 7 Scholar do do
Alice do Daur 6 do do do
John do Son 4 do do

Samuel J looks as if he is in the 1871 census of Aston, Warwicks (RG10/3138, folio 70, page 5) with father William, a Smith and mother Elizabeth plus siblings.

Hope this helps.
