I subscribe to three monthly FH magazines and although I do learn lots I do sometimes think 'why am I spending my money on these?'
Then I find an absolute gem of information which makes the subscription more than worthwhile.
Hands up all those people who know that the burnt and unburnt records from WW1 are available to view at your local LDS FHC? Sheena Tait has written to Practical Family History magazine (August 2005 edition) with this information.

That is really interesting Pam! It could help a lot of people who think that all records are lost, especially if the bit they want has survived.

That's great news for those of us who cannot hop on a bus to London.
Thanks for letting us know Pam. :)

I'm going to brag, and give my own thread a nudge.:) Especially as even I'd sort-of forgotten about the LDS having the burnt records on film.
It is quite a laborious task to find the film you want [and then probably to wade through the film (s) depending on how many Fred Bloggs there were], but here's how:
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHLC/frameset_fhlc.asp
select author search, and then enter 'Great Britain War office'.
Select the third one in the list of five choices.
Scroll down a bit till you get to 'Military records of the British Army 1914-1920'.
Click on the one with your surname, and then click on 'view film notes' in the top right-hand corner.
Now comes the mind-numbing bit because you just have to keep clicking on 'next page' till you get to your surname. There are 100 film numbers per page, and 7310 films in section A-E alone. The good news is that you can do say 10 pages a day because if you bookmark the last page you view, then you can start again at that page the next day/week/year.
Enjoy. :)

Thanks for posting that info Pam, but it wasn't just the WW1 records that caught my attention, what a treasure trove.

Pam, you don't have to keep clicking on "next page", if you scroll to the bottom of the page, you will see a box to enter the page number "Get film notes from number" enter a page number that you think will be close to what you want and go from there. A bit of a hit and miss affair, but better that having to go through it one page at a time (especially if you want a name like Evans).

This a Good News Tip, Pam :) I have found several family names so I will see if I can order them up, once I have sorted out all the film #'s.
Pamela, I think that you have to order the films thru your local LDS group. It doesn't cost much but may take some time to come depending on where you're located.

You have to go to your local LDS (Mormons) Family History Centre and ask them if they have the film. If they don't they can order it and it will be sent to them for one month. You can then go to the centre and view the film.

Does anybody know approximately how long it will take to arrive here in UK once it has been ordered?

Following the links from this post I've found the film number for what I hope is the one for my grandfather. I'm telephoning Northampton LDS, my nearest, on Monday and will let you know the outcome.
Thanks for a great piece of info, much cheaper than going down to Kew (petrol £1.12 per litre!!!!!!!)

Depends where the film is when you order it. :) I've had films arrive 2 weeks later and 3 months later. But you get a phone call saying that that the films have arrived and are now available for viewing.

Thanks Pam, It looks like the film I ordered is in Salt Lake City. I guess I will have quite a long wait.

Just an update, I've spoken to Northampton LDS Centre and have been told it's £2.75 per film and it is available (held at Northampton) for 8 weeks. But you have to go in person to order so I'll get over next week.
