I have just come across this site and thought it might be of interest to those of you looking for ancestors around this period. It's not complete yet, but has a lot of information on the names, ranks etc. and is not just for British seaman.

hi Glenys, I've just come across your thread from last July!
Thanks for this info - I've just found one of my Irish Crones at Trafalgar on board HMS Prince!
best wishes

Hi Clare, that's great news....exciting when you find something like this isn't it?
Hope you have got quite a bit further on with the `Crone's' since we last spoke. :)

hi there, Glenys! Yes, I've tracked down quite a bit more info on the Crones - a very complicated seafaring family!
I've recently found out that my g-g-g-grandfather was Dennis Crone (coastguard), and not James Crone (coastguard), which I had thought before, although I'm pretty sure that these were related, if not brothers. I'm speculating that both fought at Trafalgar - looks like James definitely did, but I've also found a Dennis Cronen on board HMS Spartiate, who just might be my man!
This means that my g-, g-g- and g-g-g-grandfathers were all coastguards (with assorted brothers, etc thrown in). Also my g-g-grandfather, John Crone, married Margaret Lyden and her father was.....you guessed it, a coastguard, as was her brother and her nephew.....
The plot thickens!!
Clare
