I've recently tracked down quite alot of information on my coastguard/navy forebears, the Crones - I've found 3 generations of coastguards as well as within-generation coastguards, ie brothers who were coastguards, sisters marrying coastguards - many born in Kent and also Kinsale, Ireland.

I also think that my g-g-grandmother, Margaret Lyden, may have come from a coastguard family as well (she married into the Crone coastguard clan): she was born in Clifden, Co Galway about 1833. Later, a William Lyden married Margaret's daughter, Mary, in 1887 - he was also a coastguard, hence my inkling that the Lydens were an extended coastguard family as well as the Crones.

Any information on ?Lyden coastguards would be appreciated; also any possible Jagoe or Jago coastguards (another family who married into the Crones) - possibly in the Cornwall/Devon areas.

Many thanks
Clare Shaw

My ggrandfather was a coastguard, born on IOW in 1850. George Henry Barton married Mary Ann Peill. I have no other information about him until the 1881 census. He was then a a coastguard at Kessingland, Suffolk, where my grandmother and her 2 sisters and brother were born, by 1891 he was Chief Officer at Revculver and in 1901 at Herne Bay, both in Kent. I have found it difficult to get much information about these 3 coastguard stations and I wondered that, if any of your folk were ever stationed there, you may have some information about them, or even rs and brother were born, by 1891 he was Chief Officer at Revculver and in 1901 at Herne Bay, both in Kent. I have found it difficult to get much information about these 3 coastguard stations and I wondered that, if any of your folk were ever stationed there, you may have some information about them, or even copies of photos.

Unfortunately I have very few photos or information of any of my family and have been fortunate to find so much through the net and the wonderful people who are so willing to share their own information when it is relevant.

I can't seem to avoid the dreaded 'repeat lurgy'! Sorry about that.

Thanks Terry very much for the Jago coastguard information - I will try to cross-reference this to the info I have to see if there are any links - brilliant, much appreciated!

Sorry Sandra, none of my Crone coastguard forebears were stationed at the places you mention: what I do have is census info for the Crones and, in most cases, other coastguards at the following places/dates:

1841: Downderry, St Germans, Cornwall
1861: St Osyth, Tendring, Essex (near Clacton)
1861: Dymchurch, Kent
1871: Lydd, Kent
1871: Southchurch, Essex
1891: Walmer, Kent
1901: Brightlingsea, Essex

Would the coastguard info from these census pages be of help to anyone? If so, I am happy to send it on.

I'm still, however, on the trail of any Lyden coastguards: I have found a coastguard Lyden in Annascall, Co Kerry, who may well be linked to our family (Bartholomew is a family name, and so is Frances (one of my middle names!)):

Birth of Frances Maria Lyden, 25 April 1865, Minard East
Father: Bartholomew Lyden, coastguard; mother's name: Mary Goggin

Any further help will be greatfully received!
best wishes
Clare

Thanks anyway, Clare. It was a bit of wishful thinking on my part, but maybe someone else has some knowledge of Kessingland, Reculver and Herne Bay Coastguard Stations and would be willing to share. I'd really appreciate any info at all.

Dear Clare
The Jago/Jagoe connections that I have relate to a James Jago born in Cork in 1841. He married Elizabeth Ann Salter on 26 Dec 1869. She was born in Waterford in 1852. In about 1871/2 they came to live in Kent. I think his coastguard service started there in about 1873. As I understand that to be a coastguard you first had to join the Navy and serve for several years before being eligible to become a coastguard. I can follow the family well once they get to England. But I would love information about the Irish side of the couple.

Any links with your family?

Annie

This may possibly be his Naval service record (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/details-result.asp?Edoc_Id=6825199&queryType=1&resultcount=7), which can be downloaded from TNA for a small fee.

Anyone with forebears involved with the Coast Guards might like to have a look at http://www.coastguardsofyesteryear.org/news.php
I found them really helpful in locating some old site pics as well as most informative stuff and advice, on Coast Guards lifestyle, places etc.

Annie, I have previously had contact with Clare and have sent her a message to look on the Forum, as her last post was a couple of years ago.
