Does anyone have access to baptisms for the parish of Buckingham, please? I'm looking for the baptism of a John TOLLET(T)/TOLLIT(T), probably the illegitimate son of Frances, in the early part of 1850.

John's birth was registered in March qtr 1850, and he may have been born in February. Census returns give his place of birth as Gawcott, but he wasn't baptised there, and Buckingham seems the next most likely place. His sister was baptised in Gawcott in 1848 within a couple of months of her birth, so it seems likely John would have been baptised in the early part of 1850.

Buckingham baptisms after 1844 aren't at Family Search. I requested a search in the Buckinghamshire FHS database, but the baptism wasn't found and I'm wondering if this may be because the surname was mistranscribed. (This was the case with a couple of other members of the same family - not uncommon with this surname!)

Thanks,
Arthur

Hi Arthur.

Sorry, no baptisms at all for Tollet etc.

The only name that is close to that in Buckingham PR's is Tullett, and it's a marriage.

Marriage 1 Aug 1897 by Banns
Edward TULLETT, aged 29, Bachelor of Notting Hill, London, Carman son of John Tullett, Publican
Maria Louisa DIMPSEY, aged 22, Spinster of Buckingham daughter of John Dimpsey, Sailor
Witnesses - Henry Nicholls & Susie North & Dorothy Smith

Sorry.

Hi Steve

Many thanks for this. Would it be too much to ask you to look through the baptisms chronologically, say from about Feb - May 1850, just in case there is a John, illegitimate son of Frances, of any surname? My experience has been that the surname TOLLIT (etc) can often show up under unexpected spellings, due to errors in the original, mistranscriptions or both. Or in this case, could he even have been recorded under his (so far unknown) father's surname?

I realise Buckingham was a fairly busy parish, so if it's too much to ask, don't worry.

Thanks again,
Arthur

Hi Arthur.

I've looked for all John ? ? ? baptisms from 1846 to 1856 in Buckingham, and there are none to Frances/Francis.

He may have not been baptized at all. Also, he may have been born in Buckingham, but baptized elsewhere.

My 2x Grandmother was baptised by her Aunt, 10 miles from where she was born. No father mentioned at all, only mother. No father mentioned on her marriage cert and Parish register. The same for her 4 siblings as well.:mad2::mad2::yikes::yikes:

OK - thanks very much for looking. I think it's going to remain a mystery for now, but at least that's the next most likely place crossed off.
