I have a rather challenging ancestor in the form of my 3rd great grandfather, James LANDER, who was born in Mere, Wiltshire, in about 1797. He was a cabinet maker by trade and appears to have worked in St Marylebone, London from early in his career. I have him at 30 High Street, Marylebone, in 1861 & 1871. He had three children: Mary Jane (b 1822), Henry (b 1824) and Sarah (b 1827). At the time of their baptism in St Marylebone in 1833 (they all appear to have been baptized on the same day), their residence was listed as 51 Little Marylebone Street, London. I would very much appreciate knowing whether the family are listed in the 1841 and/or 1851 census returns and if so, the details of the entries. I'm trying to track down their mother who apparently died when the family was very young and I'm hoping there may be some clues in the census returns as to her identity.

Many thanks,

John Phillip Binnie-Dawson

Many thanks for your invaluable advice. In fact I have the Archive CD London 1851 Post Office Directory (http://www.parishchest.com/en-gb/dept_686.html)and James LANDER is not mentioned. James HAYNES is listed as a cabinet maker of 18 Little Mary Le Bone Street and so perhaps James LANDER started out working for this man.

The baptism entry apparently listing the street number as '51' is almost certainly an error in transcription. I did not look this up myself but relied on a source in London; proof once again (as if it were needed) that one should only rely on sight of the primary source!

Unfortunately no record of James' wife as yet, but the search goes on!

Many thanks,

John
