If it is possible, would like info. on the following family in Huddersfield in 1851: Matthew Irvin/Ervin/Hervin, age about 50, b. Manchester, wife Hannah in 40's, son Edwin about 14, and perhaps other children. Would be a tremendous help with my research! Thanks. Diana.

Just wanted to post that almost six years on, still looking for this family in 1851. I have found them in 1841 and 1861 but still no luck for 1851. I have added more data since then but the 1851 would give be Hannah's birthplace - 1841 says Wales, though I am a little skeptical about that.

I've found a Matthew born Manchester at the right time but he's entered as Mathew KEVIN, a Cotton Dyer lodging at Denton Lane, Huddersfield. He listed as married but no family living with him.
will keep checking

Hannah's birthplace - 1841 says Wales
The 1841 census in Huddersfield shows Matthew (45, a dyer) born outside Yorkshire (N).
Hannah (30), Mary (15) and Edwin (6) are dittoed below, also born outside Yorkshire. There's no mention of Wales.

Can you please post the census reference for the 1861
Rather than members searching under a variety of different variations on the surname this would make it easier for them to assist you.
I suspect it's this one.

I was hoping that it migh be of benefit for DianaCanada to get the birth certificate for William A but I can't yet find his registration under any of the possible surnames.
I must say I haven't looked for a birth. It strikes me that there's a huge gap between children though. Hmm! Wonder if the age is correct.

so the HAVEN that Olliecat found could be the KEVIN that I found in 1851, with a bit of latitude on the spelling / pronunciation. Birthplace, occupation and residence all fit perfectly. Where were Hannah and Edwin?
The surname varients are a bit of a ******

That explains where the "born Wales" comes from.
There's a village in South York's named Wales.

Thought I'd search for death records to see what form the surname had taken.
Deaths Mar 1863 Huddersfield 9a 256
HERVIN Matthew
Deaths Jun 1868 Huddersfield 9a 239
HERVIN Hannah
Age 72
Can't be certain this is Matthew's since the age isn't specified. However, is this Hannah's? Either there is another Hannah in Huddersfield (which is possible considering how difficult the surname is), or she fibbed quite a bit about her age on the census.

If Matthew was from Lancashire, could this be their marriage...
groom's name: Matthew Irvin
bride's name: Hannah Lownds
marriage date: 01 May 1827
marriage place: Church Of Manchester, Lancaster, England
(from family search)
I'll admit I haven't really checked for Irvin/Hirvin's in Lancashire yet, so it's rather speculative.

Edwin may also have married in 1862 but I can't find him in 1881 to try to prove it.
Try here...

Name is transcribed as Irvin. This Edwin states he was born in Almondbury, Yorkshire. Hmm! Is he the same Edwin? Now to look in the 1871 census. :D
Edit: Just saw the Edwin above in 1871, this time born in Huddersfield. Name transcribed as Herven.

I wouldn't like to say whether it's him or not, but they were living in Almondbury in 1841. Edwin would have been a very young child and maybe he thought he was born in Almondbury.
More investigating necessary, I can't promise much input tonight as I'm distracted by family at the moment.

Edwin may also have married in 1862 but I can't find him in 1881 to try to prove it.
Possible spouses:
Susannah Hornsby
Mary Ann Nicholls
Mary Frances Wear
The 1871 census ref posted by Olliecat has a son aged 12 named Arthur Nicholls

I'm still searching (intermittently) for them in 1851. They were living at Almondbury Bank in 1841 and Milnes, or Milner Street, Southgate (FMP have Southwark, but I know the area very well and it's definitely Southgate) in 1861. Almondbury Bank is only about a mile away from Southgate, so I would guess they'll be somewhere near to either place in 1851.
Question of course is where!
