Hi
Sidney was the illegitimate child of Eliza Hurcum, he was born 1871 in Berkeley Glos. I have a scribbled note in my file saying baptised 25 Jun 1876 in Berkeley, but cannot find it on the igi
I was wondering if it somebody could do a look up to confirm his baptism in 1876, or find his bap. around this time and see if the name of a father is mentioned.
Thanks
Sue

Sue,
Try, from FreeBMD, Sidney Hurkum, Mar 1871, Thornbury 6a 219. I think that Thornbury may be close enough to Berkeley for the birth to be in that registration district.

Hi
Thanks. I do already have his birth cert. which gives his motehrs name and says he was illegitimite, what I really need is a baptism record as I am hoping the vicar may have added a comment on the father!
Thanks

Sue,
It looks as if you will need to go to Gloucestershire Record Office to look in the Berkeley baptism records, (or will someone who sees this thread look it up if they are going there).
My guess is that the vicar probably just put 'base born', or a similar phrase, and has not identified the father.
Another line would be to see if Eliza was in the local workhouse as they may have a record of her. Alternatively it is worth looking in court records to see if a bastardy order was granted against the father to make him pay for his son. The parish would certainly try this if they could to reduce the charge on the rate payers.
My grandmother was born in Ross Union Workhouse but her mother refused to tell the Clerk of the Union who the father was so I am unlikely ever to find out.
Good luck,
Viv
