I couldn't think of an appropriate Forum for this bit of Sunday morning candyfloss!
Looking through the Rootsweb Somerset Coalfield Connections site recently I made a quick note of some of the most common surnames. This database covers roughly the period 1800-1900 with one or two overlaps at each end and is based around Midsomer Norton and the parishes on the former Somerset Coalfield.
This set me wondering what the most common names were during a similar period in other parts of the country.
Here are the most common from this area.
Maggs (850+), Smith ((800+), James (750+) ,Shearn (700+), Jones (600+), Dando (600+), Purnell (500+)
and Rogers (400+).
