Sorry if this appears twice but I put it on yesterday and now it has disappeared again.
I was wondering if someone could look up 1841,51,61,71,91 census please for a William Williams born ?? (going by if he was 20 when married could have been born 1854??) father of William George Williams born 1873/74 in sheet Hampshire. He was a plumber, married arround 1874/73 ?? He had died before 1896 because this was the date that William George Williams married Lily Penn. If I can find a birth for William George Williams I should be able to find his mothers name but no luck yet.
Thank you for your help
Patricia

Patricia,

Do you have William and Lily on the 1901 census? If so, what are the details or reference #? There are lots of William WILLIAMSes in the censuses so the details might help narrow it down a bit and, hopefully, lead to William Jr. with his parents in 1881 or 1891.

Patricia,

In 1891, there is a Willm WILLIAMS, born about 1876 in Gosport, living with his parents, John [not William] and Jane Ann. The details:

Name / Estimated Birth Year / Birthplace / Relationship to head-of-house / Occupation
Williams, John abt 1841 Gosport, Hampshire, England Head Fisherman
Williams, Jane Ann abt 1842 Portsea, Hampshire, England Wife
Williams, Willm abt 1876 Gosport, Hampshire, England Son Fisherman
Williams, Sarah A abt 1878 Gosport, Hampshire, England Daughter Domestic Servant
Williams, Martha abt 1880 Gosport, Hampshire, England Daughter Scholar
Williams, John abt 1882 Gosport, Hampshire, England Son Scholar
Williams, Marie abt 1883 Gosport, Hampshire, England Daughter Scholar
Williams, Thomas abt 1887 Gosport, Hampshire, England Son Scholar

4 Little Beach St, Alverstoke Hampshire
Source information: RG12/880
Folio: 86

Because the father's name is not William and he isn't a plumber, it looks like this one isn't a match for you.

Re: the possibility of William and Amy WILLIAMS as parents of your William George WILLIAMS:

In the 1891 census, William and Amy are living at 3 Palestine Place in Alverstoke with 4 sons: Charles [born about 1878], Albert [1881] George [1884] and Frederick [1887]. Source info is RG12/879, Folio 49, Page 25. The boys are all scholars and father William is a plumber!

But, if this is your family, why would your William George WILLIAMS have a younger brother named George? Well, never rule anything out -- stranger things have happened.

HTH,
Trish

Patricia,

I think we're onto something here...

William and Amy/Ann WILLIAMS in 1871 -- and just a couple of households away from them is maybe William's father:

Name / Estimated Birth Year / Birthplace / Relationship / Occupation
William Williams abt 1841 Wiltshire, Head Plumber
Ann A Williams abt 1847 Portsmouth, Hampshire, Wife
Ann A E Williams abt 1869 Alverstoke, Hampshire, Daughter
Ada H L Williams abt 1871 Hamburg, Alverstoke Daughter
Address: 3 Palestine Place, Alverstoke, Hampshire

Name / Estimated Birth Year / Birthplace / Relationship / Occupation
George Williams abt 1816 Lymington, Hampshire Head Widower Gardener
Ann Williams abt 1854 Gosport, Hampshire Daughter
John Williams abt 1856 Gosport, Hampshire Son Labourer
Address: 2 Charlie St., Alverstoke, Hampshire

Source info for both households:
RG10/1149

If we're on the right track, the 1861 census is a real bonus:

The same William WILLIAMS is 21 years old living, at -- lo and behold! -- 2 Charlie Street in Alverstoke with his parents and brothers and sisters:
Name / Estimated Birth Year / Birthplace / Relationship / Occupation
George Williams abt 1817 Milford, Hampshire, England Head Gardener [looks like...] Haslow [or Haslar] Hospital
Ann M Williams abt 1818 Fovant, Wiltshire, England Wife
William Williams abt 1840 Upton Lovell, Wiltshire, England Son Plumber
Charles G Williams abt 1841 Codford, Wiltshire, England Son [looks like...] Seaman Clarence Yard
Ellen Williams abt 1843 Forton, Hampshire, England Daughter Servant
George Williams abt 1849 Forton, Hampshire, England Son Scholar
Anne Williams abt 1852 Forton, Hampshire, England Daughter Scholar
John Williams abt 1855 Alverstoke, Hampshire, England Son Scholar
Emma S Williams abt 1858 Alverstoke, Hampshire, England Daughter Scholar

Address: 2 Charlie St., Alverstoke, Hampshire

RG9/645
Folio: 103

Patricia,

Going back to the 1891 census, here's George WILLIAMS -- with a new wife? And next door or across the street is another WILLIAMS -- maybe a widowed daughter-in-law?

Name / Estimated Birth Year / Birthplace / Relationship / Occupation
Williams, George abt 1816 Lymington, Hampshire, England Head Living on his own means
Williams, Maria abt 1831 Landport, Hampshire, England Wife
Williams, John abt 1855 Gosport Forton, Hampshire, England Son Imbecile

Address: 15 Charley St., Alverstoke, Hampshire

Name / Estimated Birth Year / Birthplace / Relationship / Occupation
Williams, Mary A abt 1841 Fareham, Hampshire, England Head Widow Grocer
Ruckett, Leonard abt 1876 Fareham, Hampshire, England Nephew Blacksmith Apprentice

Address: 16 Charley St., Alverstoke Hampshire

RG9/645
Folio: 103
Page: 41

HTH,
Trish

Finally, Patricia...

You'll find George in the 1881 census under WILLIAM, without an "s" [RG11/0061 Folio 68, Page 42]. Take note of the birthplace of the head of the household -- the Tower of London.

And you'll see on the 1901 census that George has died and Maria is living on her own at a new address. Son John, who is labelled an imbecile in the 1881 and 1891 censuses, is living in an institution.

Two possible marriages for George from the Civil Registration Index:
June Quarter 1840, Alverstoke:
-- WILLIAMS, George
-- HARRIS, Ann
December Quarter 1876, Alverstoke:
-- WILLIAMS, George
-- BEAR, Maria

Good luck with your WILLIAMS research!

Hi Trish,
Thank you for the all the information you have found for me it is fabulous . It looks like it could be a possibility so now I have the fun of trying to link everyone up. This forum page has been the biggest help with all my family mysteries. I am so glad I stumbled onto this site. It is very hard to research from Australia for any English family lines. I work full time have two little children and drive 3 hours too and from work everyday so it doesnt leave much time for research. I have been researching since 1993 and it has only been in the last 9 months (help from a lady in Canada and this forum page) that I have found the most.
Thank you again to everyone who has helped me.
Patricia
