The 1911 census for Scotland has confirmed for me that William MITCHELL survived childhood.
He was born 31 May 1861 in Cambus, Alloa, Clackmannshire.
By 1863 he had moved to Anderston in Glasgow, by 1867 to Milton, Glasgow (where I have him on the 1871 census image). In late 1871 he moved to Grangemouth in Stirlingshire where his Father died in 1874.
His Mother and some of his siblings are resident in Dollar, Clackmannshire in 1881, where his Mother died in 1912.
I am thus trying to find a marriage for William & him on the 1881, 1891 & 1901 census.
I feel it quite possible he might have put Glasgow as his birthplace based on the above info.
On the 1891 census of Alloa, Clackmannshire I have found a William Mitchell b 1857 Glasgow, a bottle blower, married to Magaret & a daughter Elizabeth Brown MITCHELL.
In 1901 they are in Edinburgh with an additional daughter Margaret.
I have purchased the birth cert of Elizabeth which names her mother as Maggie FECHIE/LECHIE, and the marriage having taken place at Alloa in December 1884.
No such marriage exists in the SP indexes and I have searched 1880-1887 for a William MITCHELL marrying a Margaret/Maggie *echie.
So do I now waste more money purchasing the birth cert of the younger child to see if it gives differing info. Or am I wasting money chasing a dead duck?
William is the only one of 7 siblings that I cannot trace and the only one who could have carried on the family surname (if he had any sons!!) apart from my own line.
Thanks
Mitch
