I think it may say, Daurs Paternity, see reg ? , Vol ?6, 27 June 1867.
The actual birth was 25 June 1861.

Hi,

RCE = Register of Corrected Entries
It is from a Scottish birth entry. I wonder if what I thought was 7 may be a 1 then? The child was recorded as illegitimate.
Thanks for looking.
Jo :)

It is a Court Decree before the Local Sheriff, deciding who the father was.
Decree of Paternity, see Register of corrected births, Vol???, 27 June 1867.They have the register of corrected births in Edinburgh. I had a similar case heard in Dunbar before the local Sheriff, and was able to read the facts about the case, with names and addresses, occupations etc. I am not sure if they are available on line, but it would be worth phoning them to see.

Thats brilliant David. The record was from Scotlandspeople and they don't have any images of RCEs yet to purchase. I'll give Edinburgh a ring.

Thankyou.

The birth certificate states that David Sherriff is illegitimate and no father is given. The mother is stated to be Jane Sherriff, Domestic Servant. The informant is Helen Sherriff, Grand Mother, who signed her name, residing at Bambury Close Dunbar. The certificate also states that The Paternity of the child was found by Decree of Court.....????...Bulletin vol 1, page 19, 30 Sept 1865.

What a lot of info you gained from that! Is it the GRO for Scotland you contact?

Thank you so much for your help and time.

Yes! When I was last there in Edinburgh, an assistant had to go off and get a fiche of the entry and I got to the bottom of this particular mystery. In the 1881c, the grandmother refered to this illegitimate child as her nephew, when he was a grandson. Sorry about the duplication, and it will not edit.

Sorry about all the duplicating paragraphs!! What is clear is if you have an illegitimate birth in Scotland and there is a note on it of a corrected birth, it is well worth while following this up and get all the other information that is available.
