View Full Version : Honniball ancestors
Having recently joined, I noticed a discussion about the spelling of Honniball and the family name in Somerset. Diane Grant-Salmon made a comment about her research into this family and I feel certain her line follows the same line as the one I'm researching. The Honniball family in Oake the second half of the 18th century. I would be very interested to hear from Diane Grant-Salmon as I have a problem with this family.

I'm not promising that I can help with your problem, as I have only recently started researching this line ...... but if you tell me what it is, maybe I can help?
My line of descent is:
John HONNIBALL m. Betty SLAPE
Thomas HONNIBALL m. Betty CARPENTER
John HONNIBALL m. Mary GREENSLADE
Robert HONNIBALL m. Sarah BILLINGS
Which *Twiglet* are you? :D
Hi Diane, Thanks for getting back to me. I am researching the Honniball family for my friend Keith Honniball and I have done extensive work into the Honniballs in Somerset and over the border in Devon. Keith's line descends from John and Betty's (Slape) youngest son William. I have been in contact with someone who has researched this family for years but is adamant that John is the son of Humphrey, baptised at Oake in 1710. I can find no evidence to this whatsoever and the fact that neither John or any of his sons or grandsons baptise a child Humphrey strengthens my belief. Though I have no proof at present my gut feeling is that John is the son of John and Ann baptised at Over Stowey in 1701. This family move to Stogursey in 1712 and there is an abundance of Honniballs descended from them, many of the names the same as used by John and Betty to baptise their children. Are you aware that a John and Joan baptised Hannah 1738 and John 1740 in Bishops Hull Independant. The register descibes him as a husbandman of Hill Farrance and the infant John is buried there in 1740. I cannot find a marriage or death for this Joan if indeed this is the same John. Any ideas? Hi Jeremy,
As I said before, I've only recently started researching the HONNIBALL's, so your experience with the family will be extensive, I'm only a 'newbie'.
All I can do is offer my opinion on the Humphrey dilemma. I have to agree with you, there is no child named Humphrey in my file at all, and experience in researching my Yorkshire and Cornish lines for years, has taught me that Families do *stick* to the same names for many generations.
Naturally, new names appear occasionally along the way, from the wives' lines, but on both my lines mentioned above ...... the family names didn't disappear completely until both sets of my Grandparents. They still had the usual names, but all their children had *new* names, my Parents too chose new names of Alan and Diane.
However, I was highly delighted when my daughter named my grandaughter, Eleanor, after my maternal Grandma ...... so what goes around, comes around! :D

Hi again Jeremy,
Yes, someone has given me the above information ....... supposed to be John's first wife, before he married Betty Slape. As you say, no marriage or death for Joan, so I just entered them and the two children, as Unrelated Individuals in my programme (Family Tree Maker 2005) for the moment.

These names are familiar to me, I think I've posted messages to you before? I will search the forum to see if I can find them ...... as it's best to keep everything in one place. :)
