Missing during 1881 & 1891 Census Year

Hi I hope someone can help and that im posting in the correct forum, my Great grandfather Joseph Sharp (occupation sailor seas) born around 1864 in Gloucester is on the 1901 census in Newport,but I cannot find him on any others, so I assume he was at sea. Can anyone direct me to a site where I might find some info please as up stuck at the moment! Many thanks.

If he was a merchant seaman and at sea in 1881/1891, you won't locate him on a census. If you are after details of any records which relate to his work, the best place to start is The National Archives (TNA) web-site on their research guides. from the following URL, scroll down to 'M'

and look through teh relevant guide for Merchant Seamen.
