My one g g grandfather is a total mystery. The only records of him are his marriage certificate dated 1847, my g grandfather's birth certificate dated 1854, plus the 1851 census. This gives his date of birth as about 1825 in Herefordshire (have yet to locate any records for this event). He then simply vanishes.
In 1861 my g grandfather was living with his mother (status given as married), an elder sister born in 1849, and a Stoke on Trent born widowed lodger. The lodger is still with the family in 1871, my g grandfather's elder sister died in 1862, but there is a younger sister, born about 1863 (no birth records found). She appears in service in 1891, but then simply vanishes.
My g g grandmother died in 1872 (she died in an infirmary and her death was registered by the Ward Sister). In 1881 my g grandfather is living with the former lodger, who married the widowed mother of 4 children very shortly after my g g grandmother died. I have traced the lodger from his birth in Stoke to his marriage to his first wife in Redditch, to his 2nd marriage in Birmingham, so he is a real person.
My g grandfather lived to just after my 9th birthday and was very fond of telling me about his past, unless it was about his parents, when he would fly into a towering rage if pressed on the subject.
Do we have a family scandal here? Did the lodger kill off my g g grandfather and take his place, or was it vice versa, with my g g grandfather adopting the lodger's identity? Or, was my g g grandmother abandoned?
